Constructability, sequencing, trade coordination, and scope of work knowledge are at the core of this role.Dedicated to structural steel, miscellaneous steel, and joist and deck on large-scale Compute, Data Center, Industrial, Process, Energy, or High Rise projects. Candidates must bring prior hands-on field experience and a working knowledge of how the work is built. Team members are expected to cross-train in other structural and envelope scopes so the team can flex as project needs shift.Drawing Review, Scope, and Design InputReview drawings and specifications at each design milestone and perform independent tonnage, joist, and deck takeoffsWrite field-ready scopes with clear inclusions, exclusions, and trade interfaces; drive RFIs to resolution before bidMake design suggestions that reduce cost and schedule: member optimization, joist and deck alternates, simpler connections, standard details, and erection-friendly sequencingConstructability, Sequencing, and Trade CoordinationEvaluate how every package will be erected: crane locations, shipping, staging, and what must be in place before work startsBuild the erection sequence with Operations and the erector and make sure it drives detailing, fabrication, and delivery orderFind trade clashes and scope gaps before they reach the field: anchor bolts and embeds, MEP supports and openings, envelope attachments, and fireproofing; confirm every item is owned by exactly one tradePricing, Buyout, and Cost ManagementBreak out pricing by labor and material as installed: material by member class, joists and deck, detailing, shop hours, coatings, freight, erection by sequence and area, and cranesBuild Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) bid packages with a labor and material pricing form; lead leveling, negotiation, and awardPrequalify fabricators, joist and deck suppliers, and erectors on capacity, AISC and SJI certification, safety, and financial strengthOwn the basis-of-cost file, reconcile against the GMP, and manage price risk through escalation clauses and early mill ordersPrice every change independently before negotiating and track cost-to-completeExecution and Field LeadershipAct as the steel project manager alongside Operations: run coordination meetings and track RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and joist and deck submittalsMonitor fabrication, joist and deck production, delivery, and erection against the sequence and planned production ratesReview payment applications and stored material billings for accuracy; maintain fallback biddersBring field credibility to every decision and partner effectively with superintendents, foremen, and erectorsTeam ContributionServe as the enterprise steel expert; maintain scope libraries and pricing templates, and turn lessons learned into better toolsCross-train in other structural and envelope scopes and help develop the same breadth in others, so coverage can flex across the team as volume shiftsRequirements8+ years as a steel project manager, estimator, fabricator or erector PM, or GC PMAt least 3 years of hands-on field experience as a field engineer, superintendent, foreman, erector, or field-based PM; office-only backgrounds are not a fitStrong drawing review, takeoff, and shop drawing review skillsDeep understanding of constructability, erection sequencing, and trade coordinationExperience writing scopes and building labor and material pricing breakdownsWorking knowledge of the AISC Code of Standard Practice, SJI and SDI standards, connection design, OSHA Subpart R, and the steel marketNegotiation experience at $5M or more per scope and GMP cost management experienceProficiency in Bluebeam, BuildingConnected, Procore, and ExcelDegree in Construction Management or Engineering preferred; equivalent field experience consideredSome Things You Should KnowNo other builder can offer the collaborative design-build approach that Clayco does.We work on creative, complex, award-winning, high-profile jobs.The pace is fast!This position is classified as a safety-sensitive role in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
