Sr Physician Assistant, Surgery

Your Role on the Team The Cardiovascular Institute and Division of Cardiac Surgery at UCI Health are seeking an experienced and motivated senior surgical physician assistant (Surgical PA). This role supports rapid growth in volume and complexity within an advanced cardiac surgery team, offering unparalleled exposure to durable LVADs, complex ECMO patients, and other high‑risk procedures. Role and Responsibilities Perform endoscopic vein harvesting, and develop expertise in endoscopic radial artery harvest. First‑assist in cardiac surgeries, gaining experience with large vessel exposure, femoral artery and vein access, sternotomy procedures, and ECMO cannulation. Advance surgical skills under the guidance of dedicated cardiac surgeons committed to PA skill development. Work closely with attending cardiac surgeons, ICU physicians, and cardiac nurse practitioners who oversee patient care on the floors. Assist in acute‑care procedures such as ECMO management and perform surgical interventions in the ICU and on the floor. What It Takes to be Successful Required Current, active, unrestricted California Physician Assistant license. Completed Practice Agreements on file in Department. Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire. Skilled communicator, both in person and by phone, to diverse audiences. Maintains clinical competence in patient care within the specialty area. Knowledge of billing practices for PA services. Compliance with HIPAA and other mandatory training (TB screening, JCAHO, etc.). Strong customer‑service skills and the ability to exercise diplomacy with physicians, nurses, and other health‑care personnel. Excellent written and verbal communication and reporting skills. Ability to maintain an appropriate work pace and handle specialized medical equipment and procedures. Current California State Physician Assistant License, NCCPA certification, BLS, ACLS, NPI, and DEA number. Minimum five years experience in cardiothoracic surgery with independent competency in endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH). Preferred Willingness to contribute to quality improvement projects, research, education, and training. Familiarity with EPIC Electronic Medical Record.
