Financial Empowerment Consultant

Position Type: Consultant (Part-Time)

Hours Per Week: 8-10 hours a month

Met Council is America's largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. We fight poverty through comprehensive social services and by treating each client with compassion, integrity, and respect. Our programs are staffed by experts who help over 325,000 clients each year and advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our services include 100% affordable housing at 21 locations, family violence services, Holocaust survivor assistance, geriatric social work, crisis intervention and the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 120 food pantries, affordable housing sites, and JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York City.

Position Summary:

The Financial Empowerment Consultant will design and lead monthly interactive educational workshops for older crime victims to promote awareness of financial scams, risk prevention, and tools for financial stability. The consultant will integrate a trauma-informed, person-centered approach in the provision of engaging sessions that translate complex financial concepts into practical life skills training for older adults.

Principal Responsibilities:

• Develop and deliver monthly group workshops (virtually and in-person) on financial scam awareness and help older adults understand their personal risk.
• Educate participants on identifying, evaluating, and responding to financial scams.
• Provide life skills training that includes practical strategies and tools for protecting and managing personal finances including money management.
• Work with Geriatric Services staff to connect participants to additional resources to stay safe.
• Create and maintain plain-language materials and toolkits tailored for older adults and culturally diverse audiences.
• Track attendance, participant feedback and skill gain to measure program impact.
• Participate in monthly coordination meetings to align program objectives and participant needs.

Competencies:

• Experience designing and facilitating group trainings for older adults or vulnerable populations.
• Strong facilitation skills with the ability to translate complex concepts into action steps and practical tools.
• Patience and ability to manage clients with complex and multiple needs.
• Ability to work autonomously and take initiative to seek out information and resources to support client needs.
• Strong interpersonal skills.

Skill and Education:

• Certification or formal training in financial education, financial coaching or related fields (i.e. CFEI).
• Knowledge of fraud prevention, asset protection, and benefits/entitlements navigation.

Compensation: $400 per session (inclusive of preparation, delivery, and post-session responsibilities). Each session typically requires 8-10 hours of total effort, including pre-session planning and alignment with program stakeholders, session delivery, and post-session evaluation and synthesis of insights to inform future sessions. This position is for an independent contractor position, not an employee. The consulting agreement between the selected consultant and Met Council will include more detailed terms.
