TITLE: Pharmacy Technician, Inpatient Pharmacy JOB OVERVIEW: The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for supporting the pharmacists in their duties by providing technical assistance in accordance with department policy and Washington State Law. He/she maintains close working communication with pharmacists and pharmacy coordinators and managers regarding the various department programs. Facilitates departmental and hospital programs being carried out in accordance with regulatory agency requirements. DEPARTMENT: Hospital Inpatient Pharmacy, Infusion Center WORK HOURS: Variable REPORTS TO: Manager, Pharmacy Operations Prerequisites: High school diploma or equivalency (GED) required. Must hold a Pharmacy Technician credential in the State of Washington and be in good standing as of hire date. National certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), or equivalent preferred. Certification required for Tech II classification (see addendum). Minimum 2-3 Years Pharmacy Technician Experience Preferred. Inpatient hospital pharmacy experience including IV admixture, unit dose preparation, Pyxis automated dispensing cabinets, and electronic medical records preferred. Qualifications: Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion, with good public relations and proper patient management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a diverse patient population. Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with technicians, pharmacists, other patient care providers, and fellow employees. Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information. Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a dynamic work environment. Ability to work with Microsoft Office programs, Epic, and other pharmacy automation systems. Requires frequent use of data entry keying into the computer. Unique Physical/Mental Demands. Environment And Working Conditions: Capable of walking and standing for extended periods throughout the work shift. Requires the ability to perform extensive fine motor movements in the preparation of parenteral admixtures, prepackaging, and compounding. Extensive data entry keyboarding into computer. Requires the ability to interpret and understand complex math for appropriate dosing and manipulation of medications for patients. Requires the ability to wear personal protective equipment when preparing hazardous and non-hazardous medications. Performance Responsibilities: Generic Job Functions: See Generic Job Description/or Clinical Support Partner Essential Responsibilities and Competencies: Responsible for the provision of technical support of drug distribution services for all hospital areas supported by the inpatient pharmacy including the infusion center. Responsible for maintaining basic knowledge of medications including newly approved medications. Responsible for maintaining competency with pharmacy regulatory requirements and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for preparation of parenteral medications and solutions including hazardous drugs. Responsible for filling medication floor stocks, intravenous solutions, and other medications by restocking Pyxis machines. Responsible for restocking and rotating medications, intravenous solutions, and supplies by the end of each shift in the areas worked. Responsible for completing unit and pharmacy-area inspections, including removing outdated medications from inventory and ensuring cleanliness and security of medication storage areas. Responsible for deliveries of medications throughout the hospital and outlying areas supported by the inpatient pharmacy. Assists with onboarding and orientation of new team members. Provides assistant to the pharmacy purchasing department as needed. Provides assistance to nurses and other patient care staff on issues regarding pharmacy services. Completes assigned competency assessments. Completes additional responsibilities/projects when assigned by manager, coordinators, or pharmacists.
