Job Summary

The Adult Critical Care Night Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive in-house overnight for the inpatient hospital census. This includes advanced provider coverage for adult ICU patients in a growing intensive care program as well as medical/surgical floor patient coverage. This role manages floor and ICU admissions, cross-covers all adult patients in house overnight, responds to codes and other emergencies, performs bedside procedures within scope and privileging, and coordinates care with physicians, nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and other members of the care team. The position functions as the primary in-house overnight provider for all patient needs with at-home nighttime backup from Pulmonary/Critical Care for ICU patients and at-home nighttime backup from hospitalist physicians for floor-related support while on-site support is provided by Emergency Room physician.

Minimum Requirements

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing program with an advanced degree (master's or doctorate) degree from an accredited nursing program or has completed an accredited Physician Assistant degree program.

Must hold an unrestricted license to practice in the State of Indiana.

Must have prescriptive privileges (DEA & Indiana CSR).

Eligibility for credentialing and privileges in adult critical care.

Preferred Qualifications

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner preparation strongly preferred.

Prior adult ICU or critical care APP experience.

Demonstrated procedural competency in critical care.

Experience with overnight hospital-based practice.

Essential Functions

• Provide in-house overnight care for adult floor and ICU patients
• Monitor patient acuity, changes in condition, and unit priorities. Transfer patients between units as needed
• Evaluate, admit, and manage adult patients requiring floor or ICU level care.
• Cross-cover all adult floor and ICU patients overnight and respond promptly to acute clinical deterioration.
• Perform comprehensive assessments, formulate differential diagnoses, and implement treatment plans for adults admitted from the Emergency Department
• Order, interpret, and act on laboratory, imaging, hemodynamic, and other diagnostic data.
• Lead or participate in code blue events, urgent stabilization efforts, and other emergency responses as assigned by hospital policy.
• Communicate effectively with bedside nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, consulting physicians, patients, and families.
• Provide clear handoffs and transition communication to day teams and receiving units.
• Complete timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record.
• Follow established protocols, sepsis bundles, ventilator and sedation pathways, infection prevention standards, and organizational policies.
• Participate in quality improvement, protocol development, patient safety work, and ICU growth initiatives.

Procedural Responsibilities

• Perform bedside procedures expected of the role and permitted by training, demonstrated competency, and hospital privileging requirements.
• Procedures may include, but are not limited to, central venous catheter placement, arterial line placement, intubation or intubation assistance, and other approved ICU procedures.
• Maintain procedural competency, documentation, and compliance with privileging standards.
