POSITION SUMMARY

The Master’s Level Behavioral Health Intern is a graduate student enrolled in an accredited counseling, social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or related behavioral health program. The intern will gain supervised clinical experience providing behavioral health services to clients in accordance with the standards of the Colorado Behavioral Health Administration (BHA), applicable state regulations, professional ethical standards, and organizational policies.

All clinical services are performed under the direct supervision of a licensed behavioral health professional and consistent with the requirements of the intern’s academic program and BHA regulations governing behavioral health service delivery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Assist in conducting client intakes, psychosocial assessments, and screenings under supervision.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans consistent with BHA clinical documentation and service standards.
  • Provide individual and/or group counseling services under supervision as permitted by the academic program and BHA regulations.
  • Participate in therapeutic interventions using evidence-based practices when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation in the electronic health record in accordance with BHA documentation requirements, Medicaid standards (if applicable), and organizational policy.
  • Participate in case staffing, treatment team meetings, and scheduled clinical supervision.
  • Assist with coordination of care and referrals when appropriate.
  • Support crisis intervention and risk assessment activities under the direction of licensed clinical staff.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client information in compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 (if applicable), and BHA confidentiality requirements.
  • Complete required organizational training, including training related to client rights, mandated reporting, trauma-informed care, and safety procedures.
  • Follow all applicable BHA rules, state laws, ethical standards, and organizational policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that support both the intern’s learning objectives and the organization’s clinical services.

  • Clinical documentation that meets BHA and regulatory standards
  • Professional ethics, confidentiality, and client rights
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration and care coordination
  • Crisis intervention and risk assessment
  • Behavioral health service delivery within a regulated treatment environment

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will receive regular clinical supervision from a licensed behavioral health professional consistent with the requirements of the intern’s academic program and Colorado Behavioral Health Administration standards. Supervision may include direct observation, case review, clinical consultation, and performance evaluation.

Requirements:

EDUCATION

Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, or a related behavioral health field from an accredited institution. Internship must be a required component of the academic program. Internship length: Part-Time or Full-Time depending on academic program requirements.

EXPERIENCE

Previous experience in behavioral health, human services, or related field preferred but not required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively and professionally with diverse individuals. Demonstrable emotional intelligence sufficient to recognize and overcome communication barriers.
  • Ability to work cohesively and effectively as both a team member and a team leader.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and technological communication skills including professional and inviting non-verbal communication.
  • Strong technology skills including consistently demonstrating the ability to learn, utilize, and improve technological data, platforms, and information.
  • Ability to effectively moderate large groups.
  • Ability to travel within the Center’s service area, when needed.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous personal skill development and growth sufficient to ensure the continued success and engagement of agency staff.
