Summary of Responsibilities The Police Officer must be of high moral character and possess the personal integrity to handle the stress of the position. They must be physically capable of performing position functions with the ability to work/drive in adverse weather conditions. This position involves communication with the public in emergency and criminal situations. They must have knowledge of Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma Law and Order Code, municipal, state and federal laws and be responsible to administer the laws as they are written. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Patrol assigned area to provide crime prevention, control traffic and incident investigation relating but not limited to criminal, hunting and fishing violations; awareness of individuals that may be living in assigned area. Engage in Tribal Complex security functions to include walking on foot patrol, physically checking the doors and windows of Tribal buildings for unauthorized accessibility and locking of the complex gate(s). Conduct searches of people, vehicles, buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people and/or stopping suspicious vehicles and persons. Subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons and effect arrests using handcuffs and restraints. Process arrested suspects to include taking their photographs and obtaining a legible set of inked fingerprint impressions; transport prisoners and committed mental patients using appropriate restraints. Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informers. Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time. Detect and collect evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions which indicated the presence of dangerous conditions. Maintain and use efficiently all department issued equipment (i.e. weapon, vehicle and uniform) in a clean and functional fashion. Respond to calls for service; perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include directing traffic for long periods of time, administering emergency medical aid including lifting, dragging and carrying people from particular areas. Work rotating shifts. Performs other duties as assigned. Education and Experience Must possess a high school diploma or GED. Demonstrated proficiency with personal computers and associated software. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the principles and practices of police work. Knowledge of laws and ordinances governing local law enforcement. Knowledge of first aid. Knowledge relating to firearm handling requirements such as loading, unloading, aiming and firing handguns, shotguns and other agency firearms from a variety of body positions under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards. Demonstrated communication skills in court and other formal settings. Ability to extinguish small fires by using a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel and the general public. Ability to think clearly in high stress and emergency situations. Ability to operate a law enforcement vehicle at any time of day in congested traffic, during emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits and on unsafe road conditions caused by inclement weather or smoke. Ability to communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications. Ability to perform physical aspects of the job including but not limited to pursuit of fleeing suspects, rescue operations involving quickly entering or exiting patrol vehicle, lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects, jumping from elevated surfaces or over obstacles, ditches and streams, climbing and crawling through openings and confined areas, balancing on uneven and narrow services and using body force to gain entrance through barriers. Ability to exercise independent judgment to determine when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest and when force may be used and to what degree. Ability to endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with a verbally hostile suspect and crowds encountered in an antagonistic environment. Ability to prepare clear and concise investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. Ability to read and comprehend legal and non‑legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations, affidavits and warrants. Ability to effectively communicate with people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes in person, on the telephone and in written format. Conditions of Employment Must submit to and pass applicable drug test, medical physical, written examination, Physical Evaluation Battery and a psychological examination. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be Tribally insurable; a driver’s abstract from the State of Oklahoma Department of Public Safety will also be a requirement. Must successfully clear an extensive criminal background inquiry with results not reflecting any felony convictions, domestic abuse convictions, nor misdemeanor convictions within one-year prior from the closing date of this position. Must complete an oral interview. Must complete the Indian Police Academy Basic Law Enforcement Academy and the Oklahoma Council on Law Enforcement, Education and Training Reciprocity Course.
