Job Title: CNC 5-Axis Setup Mill Machinist
Job Description
This full-time, on-site role in Schaumburg, IL focuses on setting up and operating 5-axis CNC milling machines in a precision graphite machining environment. You will work with advanced CNC equipment to produce high-quality components used in demanding applications, including cooling equipment for data centers. The position requires strong technical machining skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret technical drawings while collaborating with a small, experienced team to meet production goals.
Responsibilities

• Set up and operate 5-axis CNC milling machines to produce precision graphite components.
• Perform complete changeovers and setups, typically with short run times of approximately 25 minutes per setup.
• Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to determine machining requirements and specifications.
• Adjust machine settings, tooling, and offsets to achieve tight tolerances in the range of .0005\" to .0002\".
• Monitor machining operations to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to quality standards.
• Inspect parts using appropriate quality control methods and tools to verify conformance to specifications.
• Troubleshoot equipment and machining issues, making necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance.
• Collaborate closely with team members on the shop floor to meet production schedules and goals.
• Work within a graphite-only machining environment, maintaining cleanliness and care of equipment.
• Support continuous improvement efforts in machining processes, setup efficiency, and quality control.
• Assist in integrating and operating new CNC machines with robotic tool-changing arms designed for lights-out operation on night shifts when needed.
• Coordinate with saw and grinding departments as required to ensure smooth workflow and part completion.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with graphite materials in a machining environment is a plus.
• Experience with CAD/CAM software is highly desirable.
• Relevant certifications or vocational training in CNC machining or a closely related field.
• Comfort working with high-end CNC equipment, including 3-, 4-, and 5-axis high-speed milling centers.
• Familiarity with saw and grinding operations, including surface grinding, is beneficial.
• Willingness to learn specialized CNC brands and technologies not commonly found in typical machine shops.

Work Environment
The role is based on the shop floor in a compact, well-organized facility with a team of approximately seven shop-floor employees, two shipping staff, and the remainder operating machines. The environment is centered around precision graphite machining, with work performed 100% on graphite materials. The CNC department utilizes high-end Roder machines, known for their advanced capabilities, along with additional equipment including five CNC machines, four saw machines, and three grinding machines, such as Okamoto surface grinders. The typical training shift runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the option to move to a 5:30 a.m. start once fully up to speed. Breaks are scheduled at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., taken together by the team, while lunch periods are staggered to keep machines running. The shop is structured to support efficient production, short run times, and future lights-out operations on nights through robotic tool-changing technology, creating a focused, production-oriented environment where safety, precision, and continuous operation are priorities.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Schaumburg, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $35.00/hr.
