Physician - General Surgeon

St. Charles Health System is seeking a General Surgeon to join their team. The position reports to the St. Charles Clinic Division Director Surgery and is part of the St. Charles Surgical Specialists department.

St. Charles Surgical Specialists employs seven full-time board-certified general surgeons and two advanced practice providers. They offer general surgery, bariatrics, endoscopy, pH/Manometry, with sub-specialties in colorectal surgery, robotic surgery, and breast surgery. Surgical care is provided throughout Central Oregon with clinics located in Bend, Redmond, Prineville, and Madras.

General Surgeons are responsible for providing medical, surgical, and postoperative management in the nine primary components of surgery. They will work in collaboration with other medical specialties to assess and manage patients following established standards and practices.

The work schedule requires 160 patient contact hours per month, which will be a blend of hospital rounding, procedure block time, and scheduled clinic visits including charting of patients and other necessary duties. The call expectation is for the surgeon to participate in the General Surgery call rotation. The physician's primary clinic work location will be split between Bend and Redmond.

The essential functions and duties include:

  • Examining, diagnosing, and providing a broad scope of surgical treatments including endoscopy.
  • Performing emergency procedures including endotracheal tube intubation, tube thoracotomy, pericardiocentesis, ultrasonographic evaluation, and peritoneal lavage.
  • Performing patient examinations, obtaining and recording pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
  • Ordering and interpreting appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Interpreting and integrating data to determine diagnosis, and therapeutic plan.
  • Administering and prescribing medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
  • Ordering and performing appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
  • Instructing patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Educating patients regarding health, illness prevention, and healing. Recommending community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Maintaining and reviewing patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
  • Triaging patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
  • Communicating effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration.
  • Maintaining quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth.

Administrative expectations include:

  • Documenting all patient care within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completing all necessary tasks in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate billing.
  • Being familiar with the SCHS organization structure.
  • Participating in SCMG physicians meetings and assisting in policy formation for SCMG and Physician's practice.
  • Keeping medical knowledge and skills current through regular CME activity. Must attest to having adequate (CME) to meet maintenance of board certification and compliance with MSO rules and continuing privileges without restriction.
  • Keeping all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted.
  • Maintaining active privileges at St. Charles Health System hospitals sufficient to permit performance of job duties.

  • Complying with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, supporting the health system's corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violations of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all health system's investigations and proceedings.

Education requirements include:

  • Graduation from an accredited medical school.
  • Successful completion of an accredited residency program in General Surgery.
  • Successful completion of additional educational programs necessary to enable Physician to acquire and maintain privileges to perform the range of services contemplated. This includes board eligibility/certification in the specialty being practiced.

Licensure/certification/registration requirements include:

  • Oregon license as MD/DO.
  • Board certified or eligible in General Surgery to be board certified or qualified to sit for the boards in primary area of practice at the Hospital. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven years of residency or fellowship training.
  • Current ATLS certification required.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.
  • Maintain unrestricted DEA number.
  • Maintain unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs.

Experience requirements include:

  • More than five years' experience in hospital and outpatient practice environments providing care in General Surgery.

Personal protective equipment requirements include:

  • Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

General requirements include:

  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent SCHS.
  • Strong team working and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems.
  • Intermediate in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel).

Physical requirements include:

  • Continually (75% or more): Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.
