Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic

Air Education and Training Command

The primary purpose of this position is to troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, modify, and maintain a variety and types of heavy mobile and automotive equipment some of which are very complex and are comprised of interrelated systems. Work assignments can present unusually difficult problems. In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5800-Transportation/Mobile Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS Knowledge of a variety of types of heavy mobile equipment and automotive vehicles sufficient to troubleshoot, repair, overhaul, modify, tear down/rebuild, and maintain systems and components. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures and environmental directives pertaining to handling hazardous materials. Skill in troubleshooting and repairing malfunctions in a variety of types of heavy mobile equipment and automotive vehicles. Skill in using a variety of hand and power tools, measuring instruments, and items of test equipment. Ability to interpret and apply manufacturers' repair manuals, technical specifications, schematics, safety manuals, and similar guides sufficient to effectively maintain, repair, overhaul, and tear down/rebuild equipment components and systems. Ability to communicate effectively, provide training to others, and maintain records. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. The employee works on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. The employee performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. The work requires frequent lifting and carrying of items, unassisted, weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. The employee regularly lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. The employee may be required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. WORKING CONDITIONS The work is conducted both inside and outside. When inside, the employee is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, the employee will sometimes work in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, the employee is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. The employee typically works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. The employee is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. The employee follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing.
