Logan College is seeking a dedicated, professional, and community-focused Police Officer to join our Campus Police Department. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, employees, visitors, and community members. The Police Officer provides law enforcement, public safety, emergency response, and community engagement services while protecting College personnel, facilities, and property. The ideal candidate is committed to public service, demonstrates sound judgment and integrity, and thrives in a collaborative campus environment focused on safety and student success. The Police Officer is responsible for protecting life and property through proactive patrol, crime prevention, law enforcement, emergency response, investigations, and community-oriented policing services. The officer enforces applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as College policies and regulations, while fostering positive relationships and public trust throughout the John A. Logan College community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Campus Safety and Law Enforcement Patrol College-owned and adjacent properties by vehicle, foot, or other authorized means. Enforce federal, state, and local laws, as well as College policies, procedures, regulations, and the Student Code of Conduct. Monitor campus environments to identify and address safety and security concerns. Respond to and investigate suspicious activities and criminal incidents. Emergency Response and Incident Management Respond to emergencies, alarms, accidents, crimes, medical incidents, disturbances, hazardous conditions, and requests for assistance. Provide immediate intervention and coordinate with emergency responders and outside agencies when necessary. Maintain composure and professionalism during high-pressure and rapidly evolving situations. Investigations and Documentation Conduct investigations involving criminal activity, policy violations, accidents, and campus incidents. Interview victims, witnesses, and involved parties. Collect, preserve, and document evidence in accordance with established procedures. Prepare and maintain accurate reports, records, and other documentation related to public safety activities. Community Engagement and Service Promote a safe and welcoming campus environment through community-oriented policing and proactive outreach. Build positive relationships with students, employees, visitors, community partners, and law enforcement agencies. Provide customer service, directions, escorts, event support, traffic management, and parking enforcement as needed. Special Events and Operational Support Support athletic events, special events, and College activities through crowd management, traffic control, and safety monitoring. Assist with risk management initiatives, crime prevention programs, and campus safety education efforts. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum age of 21 years. Valid driver's license. Ability to obtain and maintain an Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) Card. Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) certification, or eligibility to obtain certification through an approved waiver or reciprocity process. Ability to successfully pass pre-employment medical and psychological evaluations. Preferred Qualifications Completion of an Illinois Basic Law Enforcement Academy training program. Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Public Safety, or a related field. Previous law enforcement, campus policing, public safety, or security experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge Federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to law enforcement and public safety. Criminal investigation techniques, evidence handling procedures, and report-writing standards. Emergency response protocols, crime prevention strategies, and risk management practices. College policies, student conduct processes, and compliance requirements related to campus safety. Skills Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities. Effective investigative and analytical skills. Conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques. Proficiency with law enforcement equipment, computer systems, public safety technology, and communication devices. Abilities Exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions in emergency situations. Enforce laws, regulations, and policies fairly and consistently. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders. Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately. Work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment. Operate vehicles, communication devices, and public safety equipment. Run, climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and respond quickly during emergencies. Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds. Maintain situational awareness through visual, auditory, and sensory observation. Working Conditions Work in academic buildings, parking lots, athletic facilities, and outdoor campus environments. Exposure to varying weather conditions, temperature extremes, noise levels, and environmental factors. Frequent interaction with students, employees, visitors, community members, emergency responders, and law enforcement agencies. May respond to stressful, confrontational, or potentially hazardous situations. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, special events, and emergency call-outs as assigned.
