POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for coordinating all nursing care for patients during the intraoperative phase of the perioperative experience based on established clinical nursing practice standards. Performs nursing activities in the operating room where the circulating nurse is the patient's advocate. Makes nursing assignments for team members based on level of experience and knowledge. Answers patient needs by assisting the physician and person responsible for anesthesia care. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. Supports DHR vision and mission. Utilizes knowledge of patient's age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care. Participates in the development and implementation of hospital policies and procedures, as well as making suggestions for revision of same. Maintains open communication with all nursing staff to promote improvement in performance this position requires a sound knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities.

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:

• Graduate of accredited school of nursing required
• Texas RN license required
• BSN preferred at hire, required within two years or hire
• Professional certification highly preferred
• BLS certification.
• ACLS certification
• PALS certification recommended
• Willingness to be crossed trained to other areas.
• Good written and verbal communication skills required.
• Ability to read, write and speak English required
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of two (2) years' experience as a charge nurse/supervisor coupled with three (3) years' experience in the operating room preferred.
• Hospital experience preferred.
• Charge nurse experience preferred.
• Requires immediate judgment and response, occasionally in response to disasters or emergencies, actual events or drills.
• Must be flexible with work scheduling.
• Involves discretion and independent action within prescribed limits.
• Ability to utilize the best nursing process in the provision of nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other health care providers and providing education to patients and/or significant others plus the capability to assist department director / manager with supervisory responsibilities.

• Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice.
• Organizes and supervises personnel to provide effective and efficient patient care management. Demonstrates strong and effective managerial techniques/skills in established lines of authority.
• Maintains professional competence by participating in continuing education and other learning experiences.
• Addresses patient needs during admission to the operating room.
• Ensures that approved operating room procedures are followed to meet the requirements of scheduled procedures.
• Adapts to the needs of the unit by demonstrating flexibility/adaptability.
• Responsible for the care and cleanliness of equipment, supplies, and work area.
• Maintain Texas Department of Health (TDH), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and Joint Commission standards.
• Complete and update all employment requirements, including Health.edu, Employee Health, and Departmental Competencies, Credentials, etc.
• Administers medication and therapies within the scope of safe nursing practice.
• Formulates, modifies and implements goal oriented patient care plans according to facility policies.
• Assumes responsibility to report clinical limitations or the need for assistance to the department director
• Abides by the rules and regulations set forth by the Board of Nurse Examiners
• Adheres to policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services
• Informs the Nursing Administration and direct supervisor of any anticipated and/or actual issues/problems.
• Maintains current with all new policies and procedures published.
• Provides direction to licensed and non licensed staff in the delivery of patient care.
• Anticipates potential problems, situations and intervenes to offset any adverse impact.
• Ensures staff utilization through process improvements and staff scheduling and flexing. Assists with scheduling and staffing of the unit. Reviews staffing and prepares staff assignment as needed.
• Builds a positive work environment by guiding employees to support the mission of the hospital, providing developmental opportunities and encouraging teamwork.
• Ensures the distribution and delivery of equipment/supplies as necessary.
• Collaborates with other Charge Nurses to make decisions in coordination with the department supervisor
• Collaborates with department director and helps with the everyday operations of unit
• Demonstrates ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations
• Demonstrates maturity and accountability for job performance.
• Circulates as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

The individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirement relative to his or her age.

B. Working Conditions : The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids
