Peer Recovery Specialist

Overview Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA) – Addiction Sciences Division, MUSC. This position is part of the Emergency Department Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (ED MOUD) team and focuses on providing peer support to patients seeking treatment for substance use disorders. The peer recovery coach will screen, assess, and facilitate linkage to outpatient care and provide post‑discharge support. The role is research grant funded. Responsibilities Identify and screen ED patients for problematic substance use; conduct brief interventions and motivational interviewing. Collaborate with clinical staff to refer patients for psychosocial needs and medication‑assisted treatment. Work with patients and the ED team to identify community support services and facilitate successful linkage to outpatient treatment. Serve as a peer support for hospitalized patients, assist families, and provide recovery resources and warm hand‑offs. Contact patients post‑discharge and assess barriers to transitions of care within 48 hours. Verify treatment attendance and follow‑up with patients and treatment centers. Attend required staff and weekly meetings; complete documentation, reports, and report patient outcomes. Advocate for patients, reduce addiction stigma, and serve as a resource for the clinical team. Perform other duties as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or G.E.D.; Associate’s or Bachelor’s in Human Services, Counseling, or related field preferred. Actively engaged in personal recovery with at least three years demonstrated abstinence. Completed the South Carolina course for Certified Peer Support Specialist. Excellent interpersonal, listening, verbal, and written communication skills. Good problem‑solving ability; able to read, interpret documents, and write routine reports. Basic computer skills. Willingness to learn and interest in acquiring new skills. 2 years work experience and relevant state licensure or professional certification (if required). Physical Requirements Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors, from elevated areas, in confined spaces, kneeling, bending, squatting, repetitive hand movements, reach, finger dexterity, use both legs and arms, lift/unassisted 15 lbs, perform with 20/40 vision, audible hearing, suitable for latex and respirator use where required.
