HVAC Mechanic

Santa Barbara Unified School District Classified Job Description Title : HVAC Mechanic Salary Schedule Range : 52 (*54 if criteria listed below is met). Hours per day: 8 Months per year: 12 Purpose of Position : To perform a variety of journey-level work required to maintain, modify, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. Reports To: Facilities Supervisor Employment Status : Full-time (FLSA Non-exempt) Location : Maintenance & Operations Essential Functions Perform preventive maintenance and repair on ventilation and heating equipment, including blowers, boilers, heating units, heat pumps, exhaust fans, motors, vacuum pumps, water pumps, chemical injection and sump pumps and related equipment. Inspect, access, diagnose, and repair various types of equipment and systems using PC, laptop or iscope software interface program. Perform preventive maintenance and repair of various kitchen equipment, including freezers, refrigerators, forced air and convection ovens, steam kettles, and ice machines. Perform preventive maintenance on a variety of building equipment and facilities, including replacement of filters and belts; service and repair industrial shop equipment, swimming pool pumps and filter equipment. Inspect work done by contractors for adherence to codes and specifications; collaborate with District staff, architects, and inspectors. Operate a variety of specialized repair equipment commonly used in the trade. Work from plans, sketches, blueprints, work orders or other instructions; interpret plans and specifications; check for compliance with codes. Maintain service records, inspection records, and other documentation as needed. Prepare estimates of time and materials for new construction or repair work. Drive a vehicle to and from work sites, suppliers and contractors. Maintain punctual and consistent attendance. HVAC Mechanics who have completed boiler training, obtained certification for the district’s specific boiler system, and have been assigned by their supervisor to perform regular and routine maintenance of the district’s boiler systems will be placed at range 54 of the Classified salary schedule. Response to isolated calls for service of a boiler may be assigned to any HVAC mechanic or Senior HVAC Mechanic if necessary, but preference of assignment should be given to plumbers with this Range increase. Other Functions Perform related duties as assigned. Working Conditions & Physical Demands Indoor work environment; working in narrow or cramped spaces or on ladders; working around students. Exposure to vapors and fumes; working around machinery and electrical power supplies. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools; bending at the waist, kneeling, crouching, standing for extended periods of time; reaching above the head to store or retrieve materials; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to perform skilled work; lifting and carrying heavy equipment or materials. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in skilled HVAC maintenance and repair; working knowledge of safety practices, codes and regulations, including Section 608 of the federal Clean Air Act and related EPA regulations. Knowledge of automated temperature control systems such as Novar Direct Digital Control; industry standard HVAC control strategies Ability to operate power tools, gauges, and diagnostic or specialized equipment or software used in the trade. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, sketches, manuals, or work orders. Ability to work safely and productively around students. Ability to meet schedules and timelines. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with District staff, co-workers, architects, mechanical engineers and other professionals when needed; work independently with limited direct supervision. Ability to maintain simple and concise records and prepare accurate reports. Ability to operate a computer and proprietary or mass market software such as MS Office and Google Suite. Education, Training And Experience Graduation from high school and four (4) years of journey-level experience in heating or ventilation/air conditioning. Additional Requirements Valid California Class C driver’s license. Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate issued by the Environmental Protection Agency.
