Sr. Fuel Tax Accountant

Our client is seeking a Senior Tax Accountant, Motor Fuel to join its tax organization. This role will be responsible for managing motor fuel tax compliance activities, preparing and reviewing tax filings, supporting audits, and helping drive process improvements within the tax function. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge of motor fuel tax regulations, experience handling multi-jurisdictional compliance requirements, and a passion for improving processes and operational efficiency. This is a fully remote position with limited travel requirements. Responsibilities Prepare, review, and file motor fuel tax returns in multiple jurisdictions. Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local motor fuel tax regulations. Maintain tax calendars and ensure all filing deadlines are met accurately and timely. Research and interpret changes in tax laws and regulations impacting motor fuel tax compliance. Reconcile tax accounts and investigate discrepancies, variances, and filing issues. Analyze tax data and prepare supporting schedules and documentation. Respond to tax notices and assist with regulatory inquiries. Support federal, state, and local tax audits by gathering documentation and preparing responses. Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, controls, and compliance procedures. Collaborate with Accounting, Finance, Operations, and other business partners to enhance reporting accuracy and operational efficiency. Assist with automation initiatives and tax technology improvements. Develop and maintain process documentation, internal controls, and best practices. Participate in special projects and strategic tax initiatives as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field. 3+ years of motor fuel tax experience. Experience preparing and filing motor fuel tax returns. Strong knowledge of motor fuel tax regulations and compliance requirements. Experience working with multi-jurisdictional tax filings and reporting. Understanding of indirect tax processes and compliance controls. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills. Experience with tax software and compliance systems preferred. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Self-starter with the ability to work independently in a remote work environment. Preferred Qualifications CPA or CPA candidate. Experience supporting tax audits and regulatory examinations. Experience with process improvement, automation, or tax technology initiatives.
