Description ABOUT THE POSITION: The Building Maintenance Worker is an entry-level position that is expected to perform a variety of basic-level custodial and maintenance duties in the General Services Division of the Public Works Department. The General Services Division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all City-owned buildings and the Presidio of Monterey. Building Maintenance Workers will work as part of a team and independently and are responsible to provide quality customer service to both internal and external customers. This position may be assigned to work shifts outside of the standard 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. work hours. As part of the recruitment process, candidates who are determined to meet the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities will be required to participate in a hands-on skills assessment that will test their basic carpentry, basic plumbing, and basic soldering capabilities. Application Process A limited number of applicants who clearly show that they most closely meet the needs of this position in terms of training, experience, education, and other job-related characteristics will be accepted to participate in the selection process. This process will include evaluation and initial screening of the standard on-line City application to determine which candidates progress to the next phase of the recruitment process. The subsequent selection process may include a written test/written exercise, performance exercise, panel interview, and a final departmental interview. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to make changes to components of the examination process. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate will be required to successfully pass a Live Scan fingerprint background check and reference check. Depending on the position, as a condition of employment, the selected candidate may also be required to pass a physical exam including a drug screen and a federal background check to gain access to military and police facilities and systems. This position will require work on a military installation and will involve job duties performed on-site and therefore require passing a background check conducted by the Department of Defense (DoD). Candidates who successfully progress through all phases of this recruitment process will be placed on an eligible list. The eligible list is active for 12 months and may be used to fill additional positions including lower-level positions, regular part-time, and part-time temporary seasonal, determined to have similar duties and requirements. SUMMARY: Under supervision, to perform a variety of custodial and general building maintenance work; to coordinate custodial work performed by contract personnel; to set up facilities for conferences, events, and use by others; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the entry level class in the Building Maintenance series. The Building Maintenance Worker class is distinguished from the Building Maintenance Craftsworker by the performance of less than the full range of duties and the less complex and skilled duties that are assigned to the latter. Incumbents work under general closer supervision than the Craftsworker.Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Perform a variety of general building maintenance work such as painting, repairing seats, benches, tables, and chairs, replacing washers in faucets, and repairing electrical plugs and cords.Perform cleaning and custodial duties such as sweeping, scrubbing, vacuuming, mopping, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors and replenish supplies.Operate power cleaning and buffing equipment; dusts.Wash windows, walls, and woodwork; empty wastebaskets and ashtrays.Coordinate custodial work performed by contract personnel, ensuring that work is completed in a timely manner.Performs basic trades work in painting, drywall installation and repair, carpentry, plumbing and electrical.Assist with the renovation, repair and maintenance of facilities.Determines work procedure; prepares time, cost and material estimates as needed to complete work orders.Set up buildings and facilities for conferences, events, and use by others.Perform building security functions; provide a variety of general assistance for Building Maintenance Craftworkers and the Building Maintenance Supervisor.Support the relationship between the City of Monterey and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff.Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.Typical Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.Experience: One (1) year experience in building equipment maintenance work. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: Must possess a valid California Driver's License upon time of appointment and be insurable with the City's standard insurance rate, unless otherwise approved by appointing authority.Supplemental Info KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of: Methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in general building maintenance and cleaning operations.Safe working practices.Customer service techniques. Environmental Elements Work is performed in any city building and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather; exposure to noise, dust, grease fumes, gases and potentially hazardous chemicals. Work is in and around moving vehicles and machinery. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays and be available for work on an emergency basis. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS All City of Monterey employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
