ASSISTANT SWIM TEAM COACH (U12)

Position Summary Under the direction of the Head Coach-Competitive Aquatics, the Assistant Swim Coach will facilitate, develop, promote and reinforce technique and strength development standards with designated coaching groups. The coach will work with athletes 12 and under. The practice schedule is Monday through Friday, and weekends as needed. Essential Functions Develop athletes in all aspects of swimming, including mental, psychological, and physical development. Prepare and implement specialized skill workouts requested by the Head Coach. Assist in coaching assigned groups and demonstrate the ability to work with all ages. Provide positive, encouraging, and specific feedback to athletes on a daily basis regarding stroke technique. Organize and direct swimmers at YMCA dual and YMCA/USA invitational meets as assigned. Provide pre- and post-race feedback to swimmers at dual and invitational meets. Assist Head Coach in preparation of new season by giving feedback on practices, meets and programs. Communicate with parents in a positive and supportive manner. Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff. Attend required meetings, clinics or team social functions. Keep accurate attendance and all other records current and organized. Support and participate in association initiatives according to association criteria. Partner with other departments or outside agencies as appropriate to ensure success. Build relationships with members; encourage members to build relationships with other members and join in the YMCA movement. Facilitate and guide the teaching of the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in YMCA programs, and model these values personally. Maintain discipline with children during all activities under the guidelines of the Child Abuse Prevention Policy and Code of Conduct. Keep Head Coach apprised of situations requiring attention. Perform other job-related duties as requested and necessary. Qualifications Able to work 3-4 days per week. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a coaching role. Strong background in technique development. Current USA Swimming coaching certifications, or willing to obtain upon hiring. Possess ASCA level II certification or obtain within 3 months of hire. Possess specialized/recognized certification or education that relates to the development of youth on the competitive swim team. Excellent interpersonal skills that facilitate positive interactions between youth, parents and coworkers; ability to deal cordially with a wide variety of personalities both on the phone, email and in person. Demonstrated commitment to mission and purpose of the YMCA. Possess and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications at hire. Working Conditions Ability to withstand being in the water for long periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency. Potential exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids is possible.
