PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER I (PART TIME)

JOB SUMMARY

The Park Maintenance Worker I is responsible for the general maintenance and cleaning in an assigned city park or area. Duties include assisting in the daily routine maintenance of parks, athletic fields, golf course, and park facilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Athletics

• Collects and disposes of trash and debris on City park property, including routine litter removal, emptying receptacles, and maintaining cleanliness of park grounds and facilities.
• Mows grass, picks up leaves, performs seasonal grounds maintenance, and assists with snow removal as conditions and seasons dictate.
• Performs general golf course set up for daily play, including course readiness activities that support safe and efficient recreational use.
• Utilizes and safely operates equipment to perform maintenance duties throughout all City parks, athletic fields, and the golf course, using appropriate tools and methods for assigned tasks.
• Maintains athletic fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts within the Parks Department, including field preparation, routine inspections, and upkeep timed to optimal seasonal and program needs.
• Assists in irrigation repairs at athletic fields and the golf course, including identifying issues and supporting basic system maintenance to ensure proper field conditions.
• Maintains playground equipment in all parks within the Parks Department, performing inspections, basic repairs, and upkeep to ensure safety and accessibility.
• Performs janitorial and facility monitoring duties in park buildings, including cleaning restrooms, restocking supplies, and checking facilities for safety, cleanliness, and unauthorized activity.
• Assists with event setup and breakdown, including moving equipment and restoring facilities following scheduled activities.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Davis/Hawthorne Operations

• Collects and disposes of trash and debris throughout City park properties to maintain clean and safe public spaces.
• Performs routine grounds maintenance, including mowing grass, leaf collection, and snow removal as seasonal conditions require.
• Utilizes appropriate equipment to perform maintenance duties across City parks, athletic fields, and the golf course.
• Maintains athletic fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and playground equipment to ensure safe and functional recreational areas.
• Assists with irrigation repairs at athletic fields and the golf course as needed.
• Performs general golf course setup and preparation to support daily play operations.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Hunter Park Maintenance

• Collects and disposes of trash and debris on City park property, including park grounds, restrooms, and common use areas; regularly empties trash and recycling receptacles throughout parks and facilities to maintain cleanliness and public use standards.
• Mows grass, picks up leaves, performs seasonal landscaping tasks, and assists with snow removal as required; adapts daily assignments to seasonal needs and operational priorities to ensure parks remain safe, clean, and visually maintained year-round.
• Performs general golf course setup and maintenance for daily play and special events, including preparing greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and associated amenities to support routine play and tournament readiness.
• Utilizes hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment to perform maintenance duties throughout City parks, athletic fields, park facilities, and the golf course; safely operates grounds and maintenance equipment to support daily operations and special projects.
• Maintains athletic fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, trails, and landscaped areas; performs routine inspections and upkeep to ensure surfaces, irrigation systems, and play areas meet safety and program requirements.
• Assists with irrigation system monitoring and minor repairs at athletic fields and the golf course; supports timely identification and correction of issues affecting turf health and field usability.
• Maintains playground equipment and park amenities across all City parks; reports damaged, unsafe, or worn equipment requiring repair or replacement to appropriate personnel.
• Performs janitorial and custodial duties in park facilities, including cleaning restrooms, wiping tables, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning interior windows, and restocking paper products; ensures interior facilities are sanitary, presentable, and accessible to the public.
• Monitors park facilities, hallways, and grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and security; observes and reports conditions requiring maintenance, repair, or supervisory attention related to public safety or facility operations.
• Acts as a liaison for ongoing activities within park facilities; supports daily operations and public use by coordinating with recreation staff, event organizers, and park visitors as needed.
• Sets up and breaks down meeting rooms, studios, ballrooms, athletic spaces, and outdoor areas for scheduled programs, rentals, and special events; provides logistical support before, during, and after events, including working assigned weekends and non-standard hours.
• Provides additional operational support for park maintenance crews, recreation assistants, and management; assists with special projects, cross-coverage, and assignments outside primary work areas when operational needs require.
• Performs other related duties as required.

West Pines Maintenance

• Collects and disposes of trash and debris on City park and golf course property, including daily course setup areas, cart paths, and common use facilities.
• Mows grass, picks up leaves, and assists with snow removal as season dictates; performs routine turf maintenance on golf course greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and natural areas to ensure safe, professional playing conditions for daily play and tournaments.
• Performs general golf course setup for daily play, including changing pin and cup locations, repositioning tee markers, blowing debris from playing surfaces, and preparing bunkers and greens prior to play.
• Utilizes hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment to perform maintenance duties throughout all City parks, athletic fields, and the golf course, including mowers, blowers, trimmers, bunker rakes, edgers, utility vehicles, and light construction equipment.
• Maintains athletic fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts within the Parks Department, including mowing, edging, debris removal, and surface upkeep.
• Assists with irrigation repairs and maintenance at athletic fields and the golf course, including hand watering, clearing and trimming around sprinkler heads, and reporting system issues.
• Maintains playground equipment and park amenities in all City parks, reporting safety concerns and performing minor repairs as assigned.
• Performs forestry and landscape support work as needed, including tree trimming and removal, weed control, bed edging, mulching, sod placement, and seasonal grounds projects.
• Conducts janitorial duties in park and golf course facilities, including wiping down tables, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning interior windows, restrooms, and replenishing paper supplies.
• Monitors hallways, facilities, and grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and security; reports maintenance or safety issues requiring repair.
• Acts as a liaison for ongoing activities occurring within park and golf course facilities, providing basic assistance and coordination as needed.
• Sets up and breaks down meeting rooms, studios, ballrooms, and event spaces for scheduled programs, tournaments, and special events.
• Provides additional operational support for park maintenance staff, recreation assistants, and management, including assisting with special projects, seasonal demands, and tournament preparation.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Park Facilities

• Conducts janitorial and custodial duties, including cleaning tables, floors, windows, furnishings, and restrooms; replenishes paper products and supplies as needed.
• Monitors hallways and grounds to ensure cleanliness, security, and appropriate facility use.
• Identifies and reports maintenance, safety, or security issues requiring repair or corrective action.
• Acts as a liaison for activities occurring within park facilities, providing on-site support as needed.
• Sets up and breaks down meeting rooms, studios, and ballrooms for scheduled events and programs.
• Provides additional support to park maintenance staff, recreation assistants, and management as operational needs require.
• Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or equivalent.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a valid Georgia Driver’s License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of materials commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas;
• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, standard cleaning methods, turfgrass maintenance practices, and operation of equipment used in park maintenance.
• Ability to use simple hand tools;
• Ability to operate trucks and other maintenance equipment such as mowers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, paint spray gun, hand tools, chalker for ball parks, and hand and power saws;
• Ability to follow written and/or verbal job assignments and/or crew assignments;
• Ability to obtain a valid CDL license with proper endorsements as required or necessary;
• Ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks on a continuous basis;
• Ability to exert continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, manipulating, and heavy lifting of equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires prolonged standing and walking; frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing, and reaching; pushing and pulling; and regular use of hands and arms for grasping, handling, and operating tools and equipment. The work includes heavy physical exertion, requiring the employee to lift, carry, and maneuver materials, supplies, and equipment of varying weights. The employee must possess sufficient visual, hearing, and speaking abilities to safely perform assigned tasks and communicate effectively. The position frequently requires the use of tools and equipment demanding manual dexterity and coordination.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed outdoors and in park facilities, where the employee is exposed to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and the operation of motorized and hand-powered equipment. Duties may also be performed indoors during custodial or facility maintenance activities. The work environment requires adherence to established safety practices and the use of appropriate protective equipment as necessary.
