Writing Tutor

Job Title Writing Tutor Department Admin Learning Lab Employment Type Part-Time (29 hours or less per week), variable schedule Purpose Writing Center tutors collaborate with students to develop their writing across disciplines, also their skills in other humanities subjects at Piedmont Virginia Community College. Other subjects are based on the tutor’s academic background and comfort level. Writing tutors are embedded in composition courses to foster student success and build connections with the Writing Center. Duties and Responsibilities Work with students to develop their thinking, writing, and reading skills. Collaborate with and model the thinking and processes (such as using course resources, working with others, asking questions, navigating the library, etc.) that support success in their classes. Work with students one‑on‑one, in small groups or whole class activities; document work and participate in robust professional development (both online and in person), strengthening ability to give and receive feedback and communicate effectively. Create resources to promote and support student writing at PVCC. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. Qualifications and Experience Desire to work with and learn from others. Able to communicate clearly and effectively. Able to maintain confidentiality. Responsible, dependable, and honest. Additional Considerations Has sought tutoring in academic work. Required Travel Minimal.
