Wilderness Program - Logistics Coordinator

Northwest Outward Bound School

Working collaboratively with Course Directors and Instructors, Logistics Coordinators (LCs) support the intentional design of courses to meet the needs of their students and staff. They facilitate the packing of equipment and food, prep and drive vehicles, repair gear, prepare meals for staff and students, and restock inventory. The LC works directly with students and Instructors during course functions such as course start, resupply, or course end. They also work independently or with the logistics team in the warehouse. The workload for LCs is varied and dynamic, with time spent in the field sleeping at trailheads as well as time spent at the Base camp collaboratively creating and maintaining a healthy community culture.

Anticipated Start Date: Early Feb (Oregon program) or May 3, 2023 (Oregon or Washington programs).

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

Training: Attend, fully participate in, and complete 8+ days of tuition-free training beginning in early April or May, focused on educational, interpersonal, student management, and technical outdoor skills.

Safety: Manage risk appropriately, experienced driving on rough roads with trailers, proficient with manual transmission, and competent in loading and unloading trailers. Responsible for safe food handling practices both in and out of the field.

Role model and promote a culture of safety during work and while staying on basecamp.

Leadership Knowledge and Skill: Work effectively with students 12 - 18+ years of age and with students from a variety of backgrounds. Able to effectively work with staff who have different styles and experiences. Able to take initiative and carry out tasks individually and work cooperatively as a team member. Provide clear, effective, and timely communication to Students, Instructors, Course Director, Logistics Coordinators, and Administration.

Course Delivery: Work directly with Course Directors to plan and assist course logistical functions. Participate in course planning, including management of gear/food pack out, management of course transports, and coordination and

management of logistical course functions. Support CD and Admin team with course evacuations.

Educational Knowledge and Skill: Effectively plan and deliver engaging experiential-based lessons to achieve desired outcomes. Able to manage large group sizes and engage students in logistical activities.

Outdoor Knowledge and Skill: Efficiently manage students with gear issue and gear de-issue, able to follow/create organizational systems, able to camp outside for course functions, prepare delicious and healthy meals for 30+ people, and knowledge with gear, maintenance, or repair in one or two course elements including; rafting, climbing, backpacking, sea kayaking, canoeing.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be available from early April or May until the end of August. Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis.
  • Possess current Wilderness First Aid and CPR Certifications or willing to obtain one before the date of training.
  • 1+ years of extensive and comparable experience in risk management, experiential learning, and/or outdoor education.
  • Experience driving vehicles with manual transmissions (strongly preferred).
  • Experience driving large vehicles and towing a trailer.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive work and learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people, to create an environment of inclusion and cooperation on course and at Base camp.
  • Experience working with students from a broad range of identities, and facilitating positive group environments.
  • Experience working in a team setting and ability to independently resolve conflict or seek support.
  • Awareness of personal biases and the impact (as opposed to intention) that your language, behavior, or assumptions may have on those around you.
  • Have the willingness to actively engage in anti-racist, sexist, ableist, and all other oppressions, and continually implement new skills and learning to support the liberation of those within your sphere of influence.
  • Ability to take ownership and practice humility in your personal journey toward building a more inclusive and increasingly safer workspace.
  • Possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, motivation, initiative, follow through, and commitment.
  • Experience working in a team setting with one or more colleagues.
  • Ability to have open, honest, and difficult conversations, including the ability to give and receive feedback.
  • Must be sufficiently fit to participate in all duties as assigned and maintain ample energy and focus to aid students and staff. Ability to carry and load/unload weight up to 50 lbs, and be on your feet most days, sometimes for long hours.
  • Able to sleep on the ground, camp outside, and has some experience in 1 of our technical course activities (backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, white water rafting, sea kayaking, and flat water canoeing). Knowledgeable with outdoor gear, maintenance, and appropriate use.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule that may require early/late days and overnights.
  • Strong personal motivation, initiative, commitment, follow through, and passion for the NWOBS mission.
