ATTORNEY III

Salary $10,852.00 - $15,325.00 per Month. New-to-State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable. Position Overview California State Teachers’ Retirement System Office of the General Counsel is hiring an Attorney III. This role requires an active California State Bar membership and is eligible for a Hire Above Minimum Salary, starting at $12,046. Responsibilities Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Attorney III acts as Special Counsel, providing direct legal support across a broad range of matters. Responsibilities include detailed legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents and memos, and advising on complex issues such as board governance, fiduciary duties, securities litigation, benefits, investment and financial matters, public agency compliance, conflict of interest, public records, confidentiality, contracting, immigration and labor & employment matters. The Attorney III operates at the full journey level, works independently at a high professional level, and collaborates with executive leadership. Qualifications & Skills Strong legal research and analysis across a wide range of topics. Experience drafting clear, accurate legal documents and written materials. Knowledge of laws affecting public agencies, including regulations, confidentiality and conflicts of interest. Ability to advise on complex governance and fiduciary duty issues. Experience providing legal support to executive leadership. Understanding of labor and employment matters, including investigations and accommodations. High level of judgment, professionalism and confidentiality. Strong communication skills for explaining complex legal issues clearly. Benefits & Compensation Employees may receive an annual 5% salary increase based on performance, up to the maximum for the position. Location is hybrid, offering both in‑office and remote work solutions. Minimum Requirements Attorney III classification. Active California State Bar membership.
