Academic Support Specialist

Position Overview Academic Support Specialist Academic Services Professional, Senior – Permanent Full Time, Exempt. The person hired for this position will serve as an Academic Services Professional in the School of Law’s Academic Support Program. This role supports law students in developing skills necessary for academic success and bar passage by providing tutoring, workshops, individual counseling, and programmatic services. Analyze student needs and deliver individualized, confidential academic counseling and coaching. Conduct workshops on time and stress management, effective study skills, exam preparation, and legal writing. Collaborate with administration and faculty to maximize student success and bar passage. Provide group and individual feedback to enhance writing and analytical skills. Instructional Teach Academic Success skills courses. Assist with the implementation of the first‑year and upper‑level tutorial program. Meet with students individually to provide one‑on‑one academic counseling. Advise at‑risk and probationary students on study and time management strategies. Mentor and counsel students and graduates from first year through post‑bar exam. Public Service Represent the School of Law on planning matters, leading or participating in special projects and committees, and making presentations to management. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Dean. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Strong organizational and time‑management skills with the ability to prioritize effectively. Analytical and problem‑solving skills. Proficiency with computer and technology applications, including data management, Microsoft Excel, and report development. Ability to teach and present information in workshops and one‑on‑one settings. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed. Confidentiality and sound discretion. Attention to detail in managing multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to develop creative solutions while maintaining compliance with institutional policies. Independent, timely, well‑informed decision making. Effective collaboration with diverse staff, faculty, and students. Minimum Education and Experience Juris Doctor degree from an ABA‑accredited institution. Membership in good standing with a state bar. Strong academic record in law school. Demonstrated commitment to working closely with students. At least three years of experience as a practicing attorney, or one year of experience in student support within a law school. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in academic support or bar support roles with law students. Teaching or tutoring experience in higher education, preferably in a law school setting. Experience working with students or others in crisis, with the ability to respond calmly and make sound judgments.
