Summary Corrections professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities. Duties Acts as a School Counselor within the secure confines of a Bureau of Prisons federal correctional facility. Serves as the primary liaison between the Education department, unit team, and other departments to provide counseling and direction of the educational process for offenders. Counsels offenders through the educational process, including those requiring special services, and develops instructional materials, student worksheets, and progress monitoring tools. Promotes positive social-emotional-behavioral supports for offenders while ensuring necessary accommodations, interventions, and modifications are implemented. Creates a safe, proactive educational environment that strengthens community partnerships and enhances Bureau-wide accountability. Maintains security of the institution, performing correctional duties on a regular basis, as required for all correctional employees. Qualifications Minimum of a Bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in counseling, psychology, education, or a related field; required for guidance counselor positions a college-university sponsored practicum in counseling is also required. Specific coursework options (any one of the following): Test and measurement Adult education Educational program administration Curriculum development or design Teaching methods Guidance and counseling Career planning Occupational information Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or three years of graduate education leading to a doctoral degree, OR At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in school counseling, such as developing lesson plans, supervising practicums, providing in-service training, or administering and interpreting assessment data. Ability to combine graduate education and experience to meet the total experience requirements, with creditable paid or unpaid experience documented with dates and hours.
