Cell Therapies Financial Counselor

Overview The Cellular Therapy Financial Counselor coordinates all financial phases of Stem Cell Transplant and Immune Effector Cell (IEC) therapy at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and partner facilities, overseeing insurance benefits, coverage limits, patient financial responsibility, and ancillary benefits. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Accept assignments from the Clinical Team and review transplant and IEC benefits, preparing the Transplant and IEC Patient Introduction Letter. Verify eligibility and coverage, pursue insurance approvals, submit required documentation for authorizations at each phase. Act as liaison between Dana-Farber and partner facilities for insurance case managers, medical directors, and patients. Participate in weekly Clinical Team meetings, communicate financial clearance status, coordinate appeals and peer‑to‑peer conferences. Serve as resource to patients, families, and staff on financial issues, including policy explanations, assistance program discussions, and application assistance. Prepare Financial Waivers and Advanced Beneficiary Notices for patients whose plans may not cover transplant or IEC services. Ensure compliance with billing practices, update billing plans in Dana Farber’s Hospital Information System, and manage third‑party websites and payer submissions. Review each patient visit to confirm transplant relevance for accurate billing. Document all patient account correspondence and relevant data in appropriate note fields, forms, or databases. Perform other duties and projects as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of insurance coverage verification, benefit investigation, clinical authorizations. Knowledge of ICD‑10 and CPT coding, medical terminology, insurance standards and regulations. Knowledge of managed care policies and medical terminology. Knowledge of prior authorization and billing practices. Knowledge of bone marrow transplant and IEC process and related billing practices. Knowledge of hematology/oncology and/or cellular therapy services is preferred. Excellent customer service and communication skills. Analytical problem‑solving and mathematical/accounting skills. Good technical skills with Microsoft Office and Epic. Ability to prioritize and meet predetermined deadlines. Ability to develop and maintain relationships with clinical teams, case managers and other contacts. Minimum Job Qualifications Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum Experience: 0 years required, 2 years of relevant work experience in a hospital or ambulatory setting, including registration, financial counseling and billing preferred.
