Special Education Teacher (Behavior Development Program) Department: Calvert County Public Schools Location: Mutual Elementary School, Port Republic, Maryland Reports To: School Principal, Assistant Principal, Supervisor of Special Education Salary Range: $56,749 – $149,358 per year Job Summary: The Special Education Teacher (BDP) will work within Mutual Elementary School’s Behavior Development Program (BDP). The role provides services to students in the regional BDP program and within the general education setting, ensuring an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and behavioral development of individuals. Responsibilities include supervising students, monitoring outcomes, developing instructional and behavioral plans, collaborating with related service providers, maintaining records, and actively supporting crisis management training. Education, Certification, and Experience Valid Maryland teaching certificate (or conditional degree certificate in the appropriate field) issued by the Maryland State Department of Education. Eligibility for the role upon application. Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills Experience working with children exposed to trauma, with mental health challenges, and/or exhibiting externalizing behaviors. Strong written and oral communication skills. Working knowledge of current classroom technology. Understanding of disabilities and appropriate strategies to support students with disabilities. Ability to administer and interpret educational assessment instruments and results. Knowledge of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process and competence in writing IEPs. Understanding of the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) process and experience developing and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). Familiarity with the general education curriculum and Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. Effective interpersonal skills when working with diverse groups (parents, professionals, students, teachers, administrators). Problem‑solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions in stressful situations. Proficiency in interpreting data to adjust instruction, write goals, and communicate progress. Demonstrated success in tasks comparable to the responsibilities below. Other qualifications may be considered acceptable by Calvert County Public Schools. Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties Plan and provide learning experiences tailored to student needs. Supervise students in various school settings. Maintain crisis management training and certifications (e.g., CPI, Trauma Informed Care, COMAR Law). Training requirements may include additional certifications as directed. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes and progress. Write appropriate IEPs and complete related paperwork promptly. Collaborate with staff to conduct FBAs and develop BIPs. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and the community. Develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials for all students. Create an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development. Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, instructional assistants, administrators, and central office staff. Participate in staff development programs as directed. Maintain professional competence through continuous learning. Maintain accurate records and follow required procedures and practices. Ensure proper use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities. Maintain regular, on‑time attendance. Serve on special committees. Work flexible hours when necessary, including outside the typical school day. Requirements may include attending meetings, crisis situations, professional development, and program development sessions beyond the scheduled school day. Work under stress and meet all deadlines. For the 10‑month position, a flexible schedule may be required as approved by the building administration. Other Job Duties Perform related work as required or assigned by the principal, designee, or supervisor of Special Education. Unusual Demands May include a flexible work schedule. Terms of Employment Ten (10) month position; salary commensurate with qualifications, based on the Calvert County Public Schools salary schedule for teachers. Evaluation Performance will be evaluated according to the Calvert County Public Schools evaluation policy.
