Safety and Occupational Health Specialist

DutiesAt the GS-12 developmental capacity, the major duties and responsibilities are similar to those described below at the full performance level of GS-13 but with greater guidance from the supervisor or other specialists.This position is responsible for analyzing, evaluating, documenting, and standardizing the various program elements across DOL agencies and regions to optimize DOL leadership in occupational safety and health and ensure continuous improvement.As a technical expert, interprets occupational safety and health standards and best practices that apply to Federal agencies. Develops appropriate guidance such as new or revised policies, procedures, directives, and memoranda to provide nationally consistent application of occupational safety and health standards and best practices across DOL.Conducts research and special studies as needed to maintain current knowledge of occupational safety and health hazards including emerging hazards.Documents and/or develops standard operating procedures and checklists for activities such as inspections, job hazard analyses, investigations, and engineering reviews.Develops and maintains an up-to-date matrix of DOL employee work tasks/positions and leads/participates in the completion and documentation of job hazard analyses to identify task/position-specific safety and health hazards and make recommendations for appropriate controls measures based on the hierarchy of controls.Requirements Conditions of EmploymentAppointment to this position may require a background investigation.Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.Must be at least 16 years old and a U.S. Citizen.Applicants must meet time-in-grade, time-after-competitive-appointment and qualifications requirements within 30 calendar days after the closing date of the vacancy to be eligible for consideration for selection.Federal Employees Please Note: Your SF-50 must include enough information to be able to determine that time-in-grade requirements have been met and reflects your position title, pay plan/series/grade, tenure and the type of appointment (i.e. competitive/excepted). QualificationsApplicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.
