Company Overview

Watson Mills & Design is a custom architectural millwork manufacturer based in Lafayette, Colorado, producing high-end cabinetry, casework, and architectural woodwork for commercial and residential clients. Our approximately 180-person team operates a full-scale manufacturing facility combining traditional craftsmanship with modern CNC production.

Position Summary

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for the reliability, safety, and operational readiness of all production equipment, facility systems, and physical plant infrastructure. This role leads a team of maintenance technicians, builds and manages a preventive maintenance program across CNC machinery, edgebanders, panel saws, sanders, finishing/spray equipment, and dust collection systems, and partners closely with Production and Safety leadership to minimize downtime and maintain a safe working environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Equipment & Preventive Maintenance

• Develop, implement, and continuously improve a preventive and predictive maintenance program covering CNC routers, edgebanders, wide-belt sanders, panel saws, spray booths, and dust collection systems.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues on production equipment; coordinate OEM or third-party service for specialized repairs.
• Maintain a CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) to track work orders, PM schedules, parts usage, and equipment history.
• Manage spare parts inventory and vendor relationships to minimize lead time on critical repairs.

Facilities Management

• Oversee the physical plant, including HVAC, electrical distribution, compressed air systems, lighting, and general building upkeep.
• Plan and manage facility-related capital projects, including equipment installations, layout changes, and infrastructure upgrades.
• Maintain relationships with contractors, utility providers, and regulatory inspectors as needed.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure maintenance activities comply with OSHA regulations, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and confined space procedures.
• Partner with HR and Production leadership on safety training, incident investigation, and corrective action related to equipment and facilities.
• Maintain required documentation for equipment inspections, permits, and environmental compliance (e.g., dust collection, spray booth/VOC requirements).

Team Leadership

• Hire, train, schedule, and supervise maintenance technicians; set performance expectations and conduct evaluations.
• Coordinate maintenance coverage across production shifts to minimize disruption to manufacturing schedules.
• Manage the maintenance department budget, including labor, parts, contracted services, and capital requests.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position directly supervises maintenance technicians and may oversee contracted service providers on-site.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressive maintenance experience in a manufacturing or industrial production environment; wood products, cabinetry, or millwork experience strongly preferred.
• Working knowledge of CNC equipment, pneumatics, hydraulics, and industrial electrical systems.
• Experience with preventive maintenance programs and CMMS software.
• Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA general industry standards relevant to manufacturing (lockout/tagout, machine guarding, PPE).
• Strong leadership, vendor management, and budget management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience maintaining spray finishing systems and dust collection/VOC compliance in a wood products environment.
• Journeyman-level electrical or industrial maintenance certification.
• Experience managing facility capital projects from scoping through completion.

Physical Demands

This role requires regular presence on the production floor, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work at heights, and operate hand and power tools. Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in a manufacturing facility with exposure to noise, dust, and moving machinery. Appropriate PPE is required in designated areas.

Compensation

This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. In accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the good-faith salary range for this role is provided below, benchmarked to manufacturing-sector maintenance leadership roles in the Boulder County / Front Range labor market rather than Denver/Boulder technology-sector averages.
