Organization VIS Clinical OHO Job Summary The Sonographer is responsible for using diagnostic medical equipment to diagnose various medical conditions. Sonography, or ultrasonography, is the use of sound waves to generate an image for assessment and diagnosis. The role may specialize in obstetric/gynecologic, abdominal, neurosonography, or breast sonography. Key Responsibilities Reviews patient’s medical history and physician’s instructions Prepares equipment for procedure and selects appropriate equipment settings Explains procedure to patient; records any relevant medical history and directs the patient to move into positions that provide the best view Spreads gel on the skin to aid the transmission of sound waves Operates specialized equipment to direct high-frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body, collecting reflected echoes and forming an image that may be videotaped, transmitted, or photographed for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician Views the screen during the scan, looking for visual cues that contrast healthy areas with unhealthy ones and selects images to show to the physician for diagnostic purposes Takes measurements, calculates values, and analyzes the results in preliminary reports for the physicians Maintains patient records and adjusts/maintains equipment Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information Complies with safety, infection control and quality improvement policies/procedures Performs other duties as assigned Position Qualifications Certifications: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer certification Work Experience: Relevant work experience Experience Level: 1 year Education: Graduate of an approved discipline‑specific program Benefits This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within Vanderbilt Health, supported by a comprehensive benefits package which may include health, disability, retirement and/or wellness offerings to enhance your well‑being and professional growth.
