Registered Nurse PRN 2 Labor & Delivery

Overview At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) PRN Labor & Delivery position is a licensed staff nurse who functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN PRN Labor & Delivery provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The role involves direct patient care with patients who may have varied and complex needs and requires collaboration with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate compassionate, efficient, quality care and desired treatment outcomes. The position demonstrates clinical competence in caregiving, technology use, medication administration, procedures, and emergency management, and acts as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights. This role may assume leadership responsibilities including participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and potentially contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management. FLSA Status Non-exempt Qualifications Education Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section Experience Two years registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment Licenses and Certifications Required RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure - Texas Board of Nursing_PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) and BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association and ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association and NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation or Instructor (AHA,AAP) - American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics and FHMC - Fetal Heart Monitoring Cert - Int, Adv, or Instructor (AWHONN) - Association of Womens Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses Skills & Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations as defined in orientation checklist and annual departmental competency checklist Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, especially regarding safety Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers with a customer service focus Strong assessment, organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team and patients and families Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act Demonstrates proficient time management Maintains professional contributions as defined in Clinical Career Path program guide Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook Essential Functions People Essential Functions Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families and interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care Contributes to teamwork by awareness of unit acuity, offering assistance, and collaborating to foster healthy work relationships; seeks and offers guidance as appropriate and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes Implements staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coaches and mentors other staff and students; may include preceptorship; uses peer-to-peer accountability for department engagement Service Essential Functions Follows patient- and family-centered care standards; conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and maintains medical records; practices cultural diversity and inclusion principles Develops and updates plan of care, including discharge, with patient, family and interprofessional team; prioritizes care based on patient needs and preferences; advocates for patients/families Provides patient teaching based on learning needs and evaluates comprehension; adapts teaching methods accordingly Supports department score improvement for patient satisfaction through peer accountability Quality & Safety Essential Functions Follows standards of care related to the nursing process and regulatory requirements; supports practice improvements with evidence-based guidance and documentation Provides and adapts care to complex patients; coordinates care with the interprofessional team using clinical judgment and documentation Improves quality and safety scores through peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaboration Finance Essential Functions Manages time effectively, documents care timely, and contributes to unit resource utilization and budget considerations Supports meeting department financial targets through reducing length of stay and improving efficiency Growth & Innovation Essential Functions Identifies areas for innovation and improvement using evidence-based practice;
