Commercial Insurance Underwriter

Our client, an insurance company based in Philadelphia, is hiring a Commercial Insurance Underwriter to evaluate and price commercial property and casualty risk. This role manages a book of business across multiple industry segments, working directly with brokers and agents to structure coverage that balances competitiveness with sound risk selection.

The position requires strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret financial statements, loss runs, and industry data to make informed underwriting decisions. The underwriter will collaborate with actuarial, claims, and sales teams to support renewal retention and new business growth.

This is an office-based role at the client's Center City Philadelphia location, reporting to the Underwriting Manager. Candidates should have prior commercial lines underwriting experience and familiarity with standard rating and policy administration systems.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate new and renewal commercial insurance applications for risk acceptability
• Determine appropriate pricing, terms, and coverage conditions
• Review loss runs, financial statements, and inspection reports
• Build and maintain relationships with independent agents and brokers
• Negotiate coverage terms and pricing on complex accounts
• Monitor book of business performance and profitability
• Collaborate with claims and actuarial teams on risk trends
• Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and state regulations

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or related field
• 4 or more years of commercial lines underwriting experience
• Working knowledge of property, general liability, and auto coverage lines
• Proficiency with underwriting and policy administration software
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to analyze financial statements and loss data
• Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills
• CPCU or progress toward designation preferred
