Working Title: Transportation Generalist/Transportation Associate – International Falls Truck Station Job Class: Transportation Generalist/Transportation Associate Agency: Transportation Dept Location: International Falls Job ID: 94722 Shift: Day Shift, Monday - Friday Hours: Full-time, Year-round with seasonal schedules: Summer Monday-Thursday 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Winter Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; may include overtime, various shifts Salary: Transportation Associate $23.57 - $24.98 hourly ($49,214 - $50,697 annually); Transportation Generalist $25.19 - $31.60 hourly ($52,597 - $65,981 annually) Responsibilities Summer: Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right‑of‑ways, road shoulders; traffic barriers; perform bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, guardrail repair; install catch basins; perform drainage and shoulder repair. Perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operate tractor mowers and small rollers. Set up traffic control in high‑volume traffic per Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual. Perform landscaping duties on roadside (planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming, removal, chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding). Winter: Maintain roadways for snow and ice control: remove snow from roadways and shoulders; widen roadways of large accumulations; apply anti‑icing/de‑icing chemicals; remove frozen ice and material from culverts; conduct night/dawn patrols. Prepare and inspect winter equipment; maintain snowplow equipment, cutting edges, sanders; clean equipment after storm. Conduct preseason snow route inspection and post‑storm cleanup (bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, roadways). Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for reporting of inventory and resource management. Minimum Qualifications Transportation Generalist One year of experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience). OR successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) to substitute one year of experience. A valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement, no air‑brake restriction; ability to upgrade to CDL Class A within 30 days of hire. Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral/written information; communicate with employees and the public in person or via radio and electronic devices; maintain routine written logs and simple records. Transportation Associate Must possess a Commercial Driver's Permit with no air‑brake restrictions; tanker endorsement must be obtained by hire date. Trained to obtain Class A CDL within 3 months of hire. Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral/written information; communicate with employees and the public; maintain routine written logs and simple records. Exam Part 2 Candidates made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test; passing score required. The incumbent is subject to drug and alcohol testing and required to pass a pre‑placement drug test for specified substances. Physical Requirements Must be able to work nights; may work outdoors exposed to weather elements (hot and cold) intermittently. Drive a motor vehicle in on & off‑road conditions. Walk on even and uneven sloping ground; frequently rotate through standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting. Occasionally operate machinery and equipment under varying temperatures. May need to move between 50 and 70 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying. Must wear and use personal protective equipment to protect head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet.
