Special Recreation Camp Counselor

Responsibilities Assist with the implementation of a recreation camp program for school age children with special needs. Recommend adaptations to meet each child's special needs. Provide guidance to campers in personal care and behavioral issues. Assist the Camp Supervisor with planning, promoting, organizing, and implementing daily activities, special events, and field trips. Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week, adapting programs to include all campers. Supervise children during all daily camp activities. Provide emotional support and encouragement to campers. Assist with cleanup after all activities. Report any accidents or incidents to the Camp Supervisor. Provide personal care, feeding, and toileting for campers as required. Ensure safety standards are maintained at all times. Promote communication with the site supervisor and the parents or guardians of camp participants. Qualifications Must be 18 years of age or older. Current college student or recent college or university graduate preferred, with at least 1 to 2 years of experience in Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field working with children, especially children with special needs; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Exercise considerable tact and courtesy when interacting with program participants, parents, and support staff. Maintain a consistent and reliable attendance record throughout the 4‑week program. Be available to work a revised schedule when needed. Possess a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Job is contingent upon successful completion of pre‑employment checks, including criminal history, background, and DMV record checks. Ability to work with children who may have special medical conditions, dietary concerns, and/or behavioral problems. Excellent communication skills. Good leadership skills. Creativity and energy. Physical ability to operate personal computers, typewriters, copiers, and calculators; capacity to perform regular, occasionally heavy physical tasks such as walking over uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, kneeling, jumping, and lifting moderate to heavy items (up to 20 pounds). Position Details Camp runs for 4 weeks from June 23rd through July 18th.
