Police Officer I/II Location: Milwaukee, WI Position Overview The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Police Department is seeking to fill three Police Officer positions, which may be filled as either a Police Officer I or Police Officer II, depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Officers will serve as law‑enforcement officers on campus with full arrest powers under the supervision of a Police Sergeant. Key Job Responsibilities Provide protection of life, property, and preservation of peace and good order and give emergency aid to the institutional community. Engage in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others. Conduct preliminary and follow‑up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information. Ensure the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforce traffic laws. Provide personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community. Working Conditions 12‑hour shift schedule with officers generally assigned to work 14 days per month. Regular schedule includes every other weekend off (Fri, Sat, Sun). Uniforms and equipment are provided by UWM. Robust professional development opportunities are available for Police Department employees. Compensation & Pay Grid Base rates (excluding overtime) for lateral transfer applicants: Academy: $30.44 ($63,315 per year) Year 1: $37.37 ($77,729 per year) Year 2: $41.83 ($87,006 per year) Year 3 (POII): $46.30 ($96,304 per year) Night and weekend differentials will be added to the amounts shown. Overtime is paid at time and a half. Required Qualifications Minimum of 60 fully accredited college‑level credits, or a two‑year associate degree from a Wisconsin technical college or equivalent, or fulfillment of these criteria within five years of employment. Valid Wisconsin driver’s license or equivalent operator’s permit. No unpardoned felony convictions or offenses punishable as a felony in Wisconsin. No convictions of misdemeanor domestic‑violence offenses as defined by federal and state statutes. Good character and free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect performance of law‑enforcement duties. Preferred Qualifications Completion (within 3 years) or current enrollment in a Wisconsin Department of Justice “Law Enforcement Recruit” training course with eligibility for certification by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board. Certified Law Enforcement Officer in another state with eligibility for Wisconsin certification. Military veteran status in a law‑enforcement‑related MOS with at least one full year of service beyond basic training, voluntary discharge, and good record—employment terminated less than three years ago. Current appointment within the Universities of Wisconsin in any employment classification.
