We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to join a collaborative team of 7–9 finance professionals within a local government setting. Reporting directly to the Controller, you will play a crucial role in managing grant accounting, accounts receivable billing, and financial reporting. This role serves as a primary backup to the accounting staff while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local grant requirements.

Hands-on training will be provided by the Controller and Senior Accountant to help you get up to speed quickly.

The Team You Will be Joining 

• Located in southern New Mexico near the Texas and Mexico border, this area is known for its desert landscapes, agricultural production, and growing communities. It includes Las Cruces, New Mexico State University, and access to major transportation routes like I-10 and I-25. The region supports a mix of public service, education, agriculture, tourism, and cross-border commerce. 

Major Duties

• Grant Accounting & Compliance: Review financial status reports from grant administrators, maintain grant files, monitor project statuses, and assist with meeting grantor requirements.
• AR & Financial Reporting:  Coordinate with Accounts Receivable for grantor billings, prepare journal entries, and ensure accurate, timely preparation and submission of all required fiscal reports.
• Reconciliation:  Reconcile revenues and expenditures using fund accounting principles.
• Operational Support: Act as a backup for other accounting team members to maintain continuous workflow and assist with internal audits, controls, and process improvements.

What Are We Looking For?

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accountancy, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Experience:  Minimum of 1 year of entry-level accounting experience.
• Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Working knowledge of Workday, spreadsheets, and Excel pivot tables.
• Preferred Experience:
  • Background in grant accounting or fund accounting.
  • Prior experience in state, city, or local government finance.
• Clearances & Compliance:
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background check, driver’s license check, and credit check.

• Rate: $22.50/hour 
• Contract: September 2026 - March 2027
• Worksite Location: Las Cruces, NM 88007
• Onsite/Hybrid/Remote: 100% Onsite
