The Department’s philosophy is one of participative management, with a high degree of emphasis on training and education. It employs team and community-oriented policing and problem-solving concepts and recognizes the importance of staying contemporary with technological advances. The Department acknowledges that the responsibility for public safety and the quality of life in our neighborhood is a responsibility shared with the whole community. A new state-of-the-art Police Department building and 9-1-1 Communications Center has opened at 1 Chestnut Avenue. The new Police Building includes a large training room for defensive tactics, a dedicated indoor firearms range, and progressive construction incorporating the latest in Police Station design concepts. The 9-1-1 Communications center will have the latest communications and dispatching technologies to provide improved service and response to South San Francisco residents. SSFPD Recruitment Video Job Description URL IDEAL CANDIDATE Will display unquestionable integrity, reliability, and judgment. Be able to recognize and apply alternative solutions to problems and make legal, logical, and critical decisions in emergencies while working in a stressful environment. Have a service orientation with an understanding of community-oriented policing and problem-solving concepts. Be motivated and have the ability to work independently or in groups to achieve common goals. Accept and adapt to technology in the work environment. Skilled in using and carrying firearms. QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Experience Actively employed by a California Law Enforcement Agency as a Peace Officer within the last twelve months. Requires successful completion of probation and possession of POST Basic Certificates. Training Graduation from a U.S. High School or the equivalent, with additional education at the community college level preferred. Licenses/Certificates Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record, which must be maintained as a condition of employment. Other requirements Minimum of 21 years of age at time of examination and must meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance and agility. THE APPLICATION PROCESS To be considered, applicants must submit the following REQUIRED items: City application Responses to the supplemental questionnaire Copy of CA POST Basic Academy Certificate Copy of CA POST Basic Certificate Applications must be filled out in their entirety. Failure to complete the application and/or supplemental questions or failure to include a required attachment will disqualify the applicant from the recruitment process. Failure to list work experience, education or training or indicating “see resume” in the work experience section of the application will be considered an incomplete application and subject to disqualification. THE SELECTION PROCESS The most highly suitable and qualified candidates who demonstrate the best combination of knowledge, skills and abilities and have submitted a complete application, including all required materials, may be invited to participate in the examination process. Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidates deemed most qualified following departmental interviews will be invited to subsequent phases of the selection process. Before a conditional employment offer is made, a thorough background check will be done, including a polygraph and fingerprint check. If successful, candidates are then required to successfully pass a psychological, medical examination, a drug screen, and must be able to furnish proof of legal right to work in the United States. Candidates may be disqualified at any point in this process. The City reserves the right to use alternate testing procedures if deemed necessary. State and Federal Law require that all police officers be free from felony or domestic violence convictions. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or resident aliens that are eligible and have applied for U.S. Citizenship. Special Instructions Prior to appointment, candidates will be required to submit to any or all of the following (as applicable): Reference Check Department of Justice (DOJ) Fingerprint Check Police Department Background Check (includes review of Personal History Statement) PolygraphPsych Evaluation Pre-Employment Medical Examination and Drug Screen DMV Check A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from appointment. Determinations are made on a case‑by‑case basis with consideration given to the nature and recency of the conviction and relationship to job duties. All City standards must be met before the final appointment is made. Candidates with a disability who may require special assistance in any phase of the recruitment process should advise the Human Resources Department upon submittal of application. Candidates requesting veteran’s preference must provide a copy of U.S. Government DD Form 214 “Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty” as an attachment to their CalOpps application.
