Tax Associate

Overview Doeren Mayhew is seeking an experienced Tax Associate to join our State and Local Tax (SALT) team. The ideal candidate will have a background in state and local income tax, property tax, or sales tax. This role offers the opportunity to work with a diverse client base and to contribute to the growth and success of our Grand Rapids, Michigan-based SALT practice. The position is available in Troy, MI; Grand Rapids, MI; or Houston, TX. Responsibilities Prepare state and local sales tax returns, personal property tax returns, C‑corporation, S‑corporation, and Partnership income returns. Conduct research and provide technical advice on state and local tax issues. Assist clients with state and local tax audits, including audit defense and negotiation. Stay current on state and local tax laws and regulations and communicate changes to clients and team members. Research technical matters related to state and local tax. Collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive client service. Qualifications Bachelor's and/or master’s degree in accounting, taxation, or a related field. CPA or CPA track preferred, but not required. 1 year of experience in state and local tax, preferably in a public accounting or consulting firm. Knowledge of state and local tax laws and regulations. Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, research, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and CCH Axcess/GoSystem Tax, Avalara/Vertext/TaxJar, or TaxScribe, as relevant. Located within commuting distance of Troy or Grand Rapids, MI or Houston, TX.
