The Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) plays a crucial role in supporting dental professionals by performing advanced clinical tasks beyond the typical dental assistant duties. This role requires specialized certification, technical expertise, and excellent patient communication skills to ensure efficient dental care delivery and patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for dental procedures and ensure comfort throughout treatment.
• Assist with radiographic imaging, including taking and processing dental X-rays.
• Handle dental instruments and materials during clinical procedures.
• Maintain accurate charting and documentation of patient care and treatment details.
• Perform sterilization and disinfection of dental tools and workstations.
• Support intraoral procedures as delegated by dental professionals.
• Manage dental materials inventory and supplies to ensure availability.
• Implement strict infection control protocols to maintain a safe clinical environment.
• Educate patients on oral hygiene and post-procedure care instructions.
• Coordinate patient appointments and assist with scheduling as needed.

 

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in dental assisting with hands-on clinical exposure.
• Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certification and State EFDA License or Certification.
• Proficiency in radiographic techniques and dental materials handling.
• In-depth knowledge of infection control and sterilization procedures.
• Strong patient communication skills to effectively educate and reassure patients.
• Accurate charting and documentation skills consistent with dental practice standards.
• Understanding of medical terminology relevant to dental care.
• Excellent time management and ability to work collaboratively within a dental team.
