Plant City, Florida – Turkey Creek Middle School – Hillsborough County Public Schools Job Summary The Crew Leader, Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment across all school district facilities. Supervisory Expectations Manage assigned clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel in one or more sections of the department. Take responsibility for overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned teams. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with district policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints. District Expectations Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance. Support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan. Engage in civility, respect, and professionalism. Maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Responsibilities Clean, sweep, mop, scrub, wax, and burnish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; sanitize and stock restrooms; dust horizontal and vertical surfaces; remove and dispose of waste; maintain custodial closets. Perform minor non‑cleaning maintenance tasks (replace light bulbs, toilet seats, unclog toilets, change ceiling tiles, touch up paint, secure windows, deliver supplies, set up for activities, assemble furniture). Follow lawn and facility maintenance program (mow, weed, trim, fertilize, replace plants, mulch, clear sidewalks, water, pressure wash, remove graffiti). Open or close and secure the facility (gates, doors, windows, alarm systems; control lighting; ensure grounds free of debris and hazards). Respond to emergencies by securing the perimeter. Work independently or as part of a custodial crew; cooperate, show tact, maintain a positive outlook, offer support, resolve conflicts. Supervise assigned personnel, monitor performance, and make immediate improvements. Prepare required reports. Act as head custodian in absence, vacancy, or as directed. Possess basic comprehensive skills of the working English language and perform duties per supervisory direction. Perform any other duties as assigned. Experience Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in large‑scale housekeeping and yard maintenance, with one (1) year of related management or supervisory experience. Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Employees encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools. Language Skills Read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of individuals. Mathematical Skills Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Compute rate, ratio, and percent; interpret bar graphs. Reasoning Ability Apply common sense to carry out simple instructions and handle standardized situations with minimal variability. Computer Skills Use the internal HCPS email system and district webpage. Physical Demands Stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, crawl, handle objects, and use keyboard and hands. Lift up to 55 pounds. Reach with both dominant and non‑dominant hand, including overhead. Work in environmental conditions of extreme cold, extreme heat, wet/humid air, moderate noise, and around cleaning chemicals; wear eye protection and vibration/impact gear; work near heavy equipment and moving parts; potential exposure to electrical shock, fumes, or airborne particles.
