Job Description
Associate Building Commissioning Specialist
Entry-Level Career Opportunity in San Diego, California
Are You Curious About How Things Work? Do You Enjoy Technology, Solving Problems, and Working with Your Hands?
You don't need an engineering degree or years of experience to build a rewarding career in building commissioning. You need curiosity, technical aptitude, initiative, and a willingness to learn.
Argo Performance, Ltd., a San Diego-based building commissioning consulting firm, is looking for a motivated individual to join our team as an Associate Building Commissioning Specialist.
We are looking for someone who enjoys understanding how things work, figuring out why they don't work, and finding solutions. Someone who is comfortable with computers and technology, likes hands-on challenges, and wants to develop valuable technical skills in a specialized profession.
If you have ever enjoyed troubleshooting electrical systems, mechanical equipment, working on cars, exploring electronics, building computers, programming devices, or simply taking things apart to understand how they operate, you may be exactly the person we're looking for.
We value potential, attitude, and aptitude more than degrees, certifications, or previous job titles.
What Is Building Commissioning?
Modern buildings are filled with sophisticated technology. Heating and cooling systems, electrical equipment, automated controls, computers, sensors, and specialized machinery must all work together to create safe, comfortable, energy-efficient environments.
Building commissioning is the professional process of verifying that these systems are installed correctly, operate as intended, and perform to the building owner's expectations.
Our specialists investigate, test, troubleshoot, and evaluate the systems that make buildings work.
At ARGO, you will have opportunities to work on some of San Diego's most technically sophisticated facilities, including research laboratories, biotechnology facilities, universities, commercial buildings, multi-residential housing, and government installations.
What Will You Do?
As an Associate Building Commissioning Specialist, you will learn the profession through hands-on experience, mentorship, and progressively more challenging assignments.
Your responsibilities will grow as your knowledge and abilities develop. You will:
- Explore and learn how complex building systems and technologies operate.
- Assist with testing and troubleshooting heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical, and automated building control systems.
- Work with computers, specialized test instruments, software, and building automation technology.
- Visit construction sites and operating buildings to observe equipment installations and system operation.
- Help investigate technical problems, analyze system performance, and identify solutions.
- Participate in equipment testing and verification alongside experienced commissioning professionals.
- Document observations, organize technical information, and prepare reports.
- Collaborate with engineers, contractors, technicians, architects, and building owners.
This is not strictly a desk job. You will spend time both in the office and in the field, gaining firsthand experience with the equipment and technology that operate modern buildings.
Who Are We Looking For?
We're more interested in how you think, how you approach challenges, and your desire to learn than what's listed on your resume.
Our ideal candidate:
- Is naturally curious. You want to understand how things work and why.
- Has technical aptitude. You have an interest in mechanical systems, electricity, electronics, computers, automation, or technology.
- Enjoys solving problems. Troubleshooting a challenging issue is satisfying rather than frustrating.
- Takes initiative. You are self-motivated, resourceful, and comfortable taking responsibility.
- Wants to grow. You are interested in developing specialized knowledge and building a long-term professional career.
- Is organized and dependable. You pay attention to details, follow through on commitments, and take pride in your work.
- Communicates well. You are comfortable asking questions, sharing observations, and interacting with others.
- Enjoys variety. You appreciate a combination of independent assignments, teamwork, office activities, and hands-on fieldwork.
- Values safety. You understand the importance of following procedures when working around construction activities, machinery, and electrical equipment.
You don't have to know everything when you join us. We are looking for someone who is excited about learning.
Education and Experience — Multiple Paths Welcome
No specific degree, certification, or previous commissioning experience is required.
Technical interests and abilities can develop in many ways. Backgrounds that may be particularly valuable include:
- Personal experience repairing, maintaining, or modifying cars, motorcycles, appliances, or mechanical equipment.
- Interest in computers, electronics, programming, networking, robotics, or automation.
- Experience in construction, building maintenance, mechanical or electrical trades, or technical service work.
- Military service or technical military training.
- Trade school, apprenticeship, community college, or technical coursework.
- Hands-on hobbies, personal projects, or self-taught technical skills.
These are examples, not prerequisites. If you believe you have the curiosity and ability to succeed in a technical profession, we encourage you to apply.
Position Requirements
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to reach project sites throughout the Southern California region; most work is in San Diego County.
- Ability to work in office environments, operating facilities, and active construction sites.
- Ability to perform field activities that may include climbing ladders, accessing rooftops and mechanical spaces, working outdoors, and lifting equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn new software and technical applications.
- Ability to meet applicable requirements for access to government facilities and military installations, including required background screening.
- Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with applicable company and project-site requirements.
Why Build Your Career with ARGO?
At Argo Performance, we believe a company should work for its employees, creating an environment where talented individuals can grow, succeed, and provide exceptional service to clients.
We are a specialized, growing consulting firm that values independent thinking, employee empowerment, technical excellence, and personal responsibility.
Unlike large organizations where entry-level employees may have narrowly defined responsibilities, ARGO provides opportunities to learn a wide range of technologies, participate in meaningful projects, and develop professional capabilities.
We offer:
- Competitive compensation with opportunities for performance-based advancement and bonuses.
- 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer matching.
- Health, prescription, dental, and vision insurance options.
- Generous paid time off and paid holidays.
- Professional education, training, and development opportunities.
- Direct exposure to experienced professionals and advanced building technologies.
- A collaborative work environment that encourages curiosity, innovative thinking, and individual growth.
- Opportunities to develop a long-term career in a specialized and evolving technical field.
We are not simply looking to fill a position. We want to find someone who can grow with our company and become an important member of our team.
Interested? We'd Like to Hear from You.
We recognize that a resume doesn't always tell the whole story, especially when you're beginning your career.
Along with your resume, please send us a brief one-page introduction email or letter explaining why this opportunity interests you and what makes you a good candidate.
You may submit either a written introduction or a short video. Tell us about your technical interests, projects you've worked on, things you've fixed or built, or why you enjoy learning how technology works.
