Overview Industrial Utility Electrician III – responsible for leading crews and performing senior journeyman-level tasks in the repair and installation of 15KV electrical substation switchgear, distribution systems, 1000V to 15KV motors, control systems, treatment process equipment, and lighting systems within industrial utility facilities. Key Responsibilities Plan, organize, schedule, and lead crews in completion of work orders, including material preparation, quality inspections, switching requests, as‑built markups, and other necessary tasks. Communicate with customers to explain activities that impact services. Train lower‑level electricians in sound electrical maintenance and construction techniques for high, medium, and low‑voltage distribution systems and low‑voltage process control systems. Communicate with supervisor regarding work order planning and status. Monitor compliance and communicate safety issues to personnel. Perform complex diagnostics, calibrations, maintenance, and repairs on 2.5KV–15KV substation switchgear, distribution equipment, protective relays, breakers, battery banks, and capacitor trip systems. Diagnose, maintain, and repair 1000V–15KV motors and motor control systems and various process control systems. Repair and install electrical distribution, treatment process, or other critical utility equipment, and various lighting systems using bucket truck as needed. Perform preventative maintenance on all electrical equipment for treatment plant, utility, or remote location facilities. Coordinate 15KV switching for maintenance repairs and power outages with electrical utility providers and facilities during outages or planned switching. Maintain accurate records of electrical maintenance activities using CMMS and other software applications. Provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, and guidance to others. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent with at least 4 years of journeyman‑level electrician experience in medium‑voltage (5KV–15KV) systems, motor controls, facility building equipment, and lighting systems at a utility or industrial plant. Alternatively, 3 years of journeyman‑level electrician experience with 2 years of directly related utility electrical experience at voltages of 1000V to 15kV. Experience includes commercial or industrial wiring, conduit installation, troubleshooting of motor control systems, mechanical starters, soft starters, and variable frequency drives. Possess a valid State of Texas Journeyman Electrician License. Valid Texas Class C Driver License, or ability to obtain one by hire date. Ability to read, interpret, and modify blueprints, schematics, and diagrams. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and plan and organize effectively. Proficiency with computers and related software. Ability to work in confined spaces, hazardous atmospheres, and at heights up to 200 feet on ladders (elevation to 300 lb capacity). Ability to lift or carry equipment up to 50 lbs unassisted. Willingness to participate in on‑call program and work scheduled or unscheduled overtime. Eligibility to meet the City of Austin Driver Safety Program driver standards per City policy. Preferred Qualifications Extensive knowledge of industrial or utility electrical systems. Skilled in troubleshooting using advanced test equipment (megger, power analyzers, thermal imaging). Advanced training in predictive maintenance technologies (infrared, vibration analysis, power quality). Experience with substation maintenance, medium‑voltage switching, and motor control troubleshooting. Demonstrated experience with substation maintenance, medium‑voltage switching, and motor control troubleshooting. Driver and Travel Requirements This position requires travel between various locations and driving a City vehicle on the AOA. Applicants must have a Valid Texas Class C Driver License and meet the City of Austin Driver Record Evaluation standards (no more than three moving violations or six points within 36 months). External new hires must satisfy the City’s Driver Record Evaluation requisite. Work Schedule Sunday–Wednesday: 4:00AM–2:30PM or 2:30PM–1:00AM; Wednesday–Saturday: 4:00AM–2:30PM or 2:30PM–1:00AM. Hours may vary to meet departmental needs, and may include after‑hours, holidays, and weekend work. Shift incentives are provided for evening, night, and weekend work. Salary Range $38.32 – $48.67 per hour.
