This position combines classroom instruction and hands-on lab and practical training, as well as assessment of technical skills. The Electrical Instructor delivers structured training covering electrical safety, trade mathematics, electrical theory, blueprint reading, National Electrical Code (NEC) concepts, conduit installation, wire pulling, device installation, grounding and bonding, testing, troubleshooting, and commercial electrical construction codes and practices. Training is delivered through two primary formats: short, topic-driven pilot sprints that provide focused, rapid-turn instruction on specific subjects such as NEC code updates or new installation techniques, and longer, outcome-designed learning pathways that build structured skill progression over multiple sessions. The Electrical Instructor translates real-world field experience into practical learning experiences that prepare employees to perform safely, efficiently, and professionally on commercial construction projects. The role requires an individual who can balance strong electrical trade knowledge with effective classroom facilitation, coaching, mentoring, and skills assessment. In addition to instructional duties, the Electrical Instructor screens job applicants' technical skills and abilities and collaborates with hiring managers to assess crew performance where necessary and address targeted skill or performance concerns. This position requires routine travel to support company training programs, regional operations, and project-specific workforce development needs. Essential Functions, Duties, And Responsibilities Tasks may include, but are not limited to the following: Technical Training & Instruction Deliver structured classroom, and/or onsite lab, and hands-on electrical construction training using varied curriculum, lesson plans, demonstrations, practical exercises, and assessments Design and deliver both short, topic-driven pilot sprints for targeted or time-sensitive training needs (for example, NEC code updates or new installation techniques) and longer, outcome-designed training pathways that build structured skill progression over multiple sessions Provide instruction covering foundational through advanced commercial electrical construction concepts appropriate to the experience level of participants Test prep, code changes, and site-specific instruction Maintain an effective balance between classroom instruction and applied learning Demonstrate proper electrical installation techniques and provide learners with supervised opportunities to practice and demonstrate competency Share real-world commercial construction experience, troubleshooting techniques, and lessons learned to connect technical concepts with field applications Adjust instructional methods based on learner experience, comprehension, skill level, and learning needs Reinforce company standards for safety, quality, productivity, professionalism, and workmanship throughout all training activities Electrical Foundations & Theory Provide instruction and practical application in areas including: Electrical terminology and fundamental electrical theory Ohm's Law and basic electrical calculations Series, parallel, and combination circuits AC and DC electrical concepts appropriate to the curriculum Trade mathematics, measurements, fractions, decimals, and electrical calculations Electrical symbols, wiring diagrams, and schematics National Electrical Code concepts and code navigation Electrical materials, components, boxes, fittings, and raceway systems Proper selection and use of electrical hand and power tools Basic electrical testing and troubleshooting principles. Commercial Electrical Installation Teach, demonstrate, and assess proficiency in commercial electrical construction activities including: Blueprint and electrical drawing interpretation Layout and installation of electrical raceway systems EMT and rigid conduit layout, bending, cutting, threading, and installation Installation and support of boxes, raceways, and electrical equipment Conduit fittings and proper installation methods Wire pulling and conductor identification Conductor preparation, splicing, and termination Installation of receptacles, switches, lighting devices, and related electrical components Branch circuit planning and installation Panelboard and circuit breaker installation concepts Grounding and bonding Grounding electrode and ground rod installation GFCI and AFCI concepts, installation, and testing Electrical voltage and continuity testing Proper use of multimeters and other electrical testing equipment Fault identification and troubleshooting Installation practices consistent with applicable NEC requirements, project specifications, and company standards Blueprint & Construction Document Training Teach learners how to read and interpret commercial construction drawings, electrical plans, specifications, and electrical symbols Provide instruction on electrical symbols, legends, schedules, one-line diagrams, and applicable construction documentation Teach learners how electrical installations coordinate with architectural, mechanical, plumbing, structural, and other construction systems Reinforce the importance of following approved drawings, specifications, manufacturer instructions, and applicable codes Incorporate practical layout exercises and field scenarios into blueprint-reading instruction Safety Leadership Model and enforce company safety expectations during all classroom, lab, shop, and field training activities Reinforce proper selection, inspection, and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Incorporate job hazard awareness, pre-task planning, safety briefings, and hazard recognition into training activities Teach and reinforce Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and electrical safe-work practices Provide instruction regarding shock hazards, arc-flash awareness, electrical hazard recognition, and applicable NFPA 70E concepts Demonstrate safe operation of hand tools, power tools, ladders, testing equipment, and electrical training equipment Maintain an organized training environment free from recognized hazards Immediately stop unsafe activities and provide corrective instruction when unsafe behaviors or conditions are identified Reinforce personal responsibility and accountability for jobsite safety Facilitate or coordinate OSHA 10 training when qualified and required by the training program Employee Development & Coaching Mentor and coach employees to develop technical competence, confidence, professionalism, and accountability Observe individual performance and provide timely and constructive feedback Identify employees requiring additional instruction, practice, or remediation and provide appropriate coaching Reinforce jobsite expectations related to attendance, punctuality, communication, teamwork, productivity, organization, and quality Help employees understand how classroom and lab skills translate to actual commercial construction activities Promote continuous learning and career development within the electrical trade Provide guidance regarding career electrical pathways and progression opportunities Reinforce crew leadership and safety leadership principles appropriate to the learner's experience level Collaborate with hiring managers to assess crew performance where necessary and address targeted skill or performance concerns through coaching, additional instruction, or remediation Professional & Jobsite Readiness Provide instruction and coaching related to professional expectations, including: Jobsite communication and professionalism Teamwork and working effectively with supervision and other trades Daily work planning and organization Proper care and accountability for tools and equipment Job documentation and work logs Material organization and housekeeping Productivity and workmanship expectations Construction site conduct and professional behavior Career development and advancement within the electrical trade Skills Assessment & Evaluation Administer written knowledge checks, practical exercises, skills demonstrations, and competency assessments Screen job applicants' electrical skills and abilities as part of the hiring process, providing objective, documented assessment results to support hiring decisions Administer and evaluate targeted skills testing for apprentices to verify competency progression and readiness for advancement Evaluate learner proficiency against established training standards Complete required skill verification and competency signoffs Provide individualized feedback regarding strengths and development opportunities Guide learners through hands-on projects or capstone exercises when included in the curriculum Conduct final program evaluations and provide recommendations regarding learner readiness or additional development needs Maintain objective and consistent evaluation standards Training Administration Maintain accurate attendance, completion, certification, competency, and performance records Document learner progress and maintain required training records in accordance with company procedures Maintain training rosters, skills matrices, evaluation forms, and certification documentation Enter and maintain training information within the company's Learning Management System (LMS) or other designated systems Provide reports regarding attendance, completion, learner performance, and identified development needs Maintain confidentiality of employees and training records Curriculum & Program Development Review training materials for technical accuracy, relevance, sequencing, and effectiveness Collaborate with Learning & Development personnel, field leadership, Safety, subject matter experts, and Operations to identify workforce training needs Provide recommendations for new or revised electrical training programs Assist with the development and revision of lesson plans, practical exercises, assessments, demonstrations, job aids, and instructor materials Incorporate lessons learned from commercial construction projects into training programs Ensure training content remains aligned with current codes, safety requirements, company standards, and field practices Training Lab, Tools & Equipment Maintain classroom, shop, and lab environments in a safe, clean, professional, and organized condition Inspect tools and training equipment before use and remove unsafe or damaged equipment from service Maintain appropriate quantities of electrical materials, conduit, wire, devices, tools, and training supplies Assist with training inventory management and communicate material or equipment needs Ensure tools, equipment, and materials are properly stored and secured following training activities Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Extensive knowledge of commercial electrical construction methods, materials, tools, equipment, and installation practices Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) Strong knowledge of electrical safety practices, including OSHA requirements, NFPA 70E concepts, LOTO, PPE, and electrical hazard recognition Demonstrated proficiency with EMT and rigid conduit layout, bending, and installation Demonstrated proficiency with wire pulling, conductor termination, device installation, grounding and bonding, testing, and troubleshooting Strong understanding of electrical theory and electrical calculations Ability to read and interpret commercial electrical drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams, specifications, and electrical symbols Ability to safely operate and demonstrate electrical meters, testing equipment, hand tools, and power tools Strong instructional, presentation, coaching, and classroom facilitation skills Ability to explain complex electrical concepts in practical, understandable terms Ability to work effectively with learners who have varying levels of electrical construction experience Ability to adapt teaching methods to different learning styles and skill levels Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong organizational, documentation, and time-management skills Ability to work independently and manage multiple training priorities Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn company training and LMS platforms Ability and willingness to travel as required Supervisory Responsibilities This position does not typically have direct employee supervisory responsibility. However, the Electrical Instructor provides functional leadership, technical instruction, coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to employees participating in assigned training programs The Electrical Instructor is responsible for maintaining appropriate classroom and lab discipline and has authority to stop training activities when unsafe conditions or behaviors are identified Work Environment/Physical Demands/Position Type and Expected Work Time Work Environment: Work is performed in a combination of classroom, electrical training shop, office, and construction environments The employee may regularly be exposed to construction-related noise, dust, electrical equipment, conduit, wiring materials, ladders, hand and power tools, and other conditions commonly associated with commercial electrical construction The position may periodically work at active commercial construction sites and must comply with all company, client, and site-specific safety requirements Physical Requirements: Stand and walk for extended periods while providing classroom and hands-on instruction Frequently bend, stoop, squat, kneel, reach, climb, push, pull, and perform repetitive hand movements Lift, carry, position, and demonstrate the use of tools, conduit, electrical components, and training equipment weighing up to 50 pounds Safely climb and work from ladders while demonstrating applicable installation techniques Safely operate hand tools, power tools, meters, and electrical training equipment Physically demonstrate conduit bending, installation, wiring, termination, testing, and related electrical tasks Work in environments with variable noise, dust, temperature, and physical activity levels Wear required PPE for extended periods Position Type: Fulltime/Exempt The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, approximately 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Actual hours may vary based on class schedules, project requirements, travel, and business needs. Early mornings, evenings, weekends, or alternate schedules may occasionally be required to accommodate training programs and field operations. Travel Requirements - 20%-30% Travel is primarily in-state to deliver training at company locations, commercial construction projects, or designated training facilities, with occasional out-of-state travel as business needs require. Travel may include overnight and multi-day assignments. Frequency and duration will vary based on training and operational needs. Required Education And Experience Education: High school diploma or GED/equivalent required Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship or formal electrical trade training program preferred Certifications/Licenses: Required: Valid Journeyman Electrician license NFPA 70E certification/training OSHA 30 certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record when travel requires operation of a company or rental vehicle Preferred: Master Electrician license OSHA Authorized Construction Trainer credentials Adult education, vocational instruction, train-the-trainer, or instructional facilitation certification Experience Requirements: Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible, hands-on commercial electrical construction experience required Demonstrated experience performing electrical installations, conduit work, wiring, testing, troubleshooting, and electrical safety procedures Prior experience mentoring, coaching, leading, or developing electricians, apprentices, technicians, or other craft employees strongly preferred Prior instructional or formal training experience preferred but not required for candidates with significant field leadership and mentoring experience.
