Assistant County Attorney III

Compensation Range: $113,588.80 - $159,036.80 Job Description Summary: Under the overall direction and supervision of the County Attorney, an Assistant County Attorney III will provide legal services to the Board of Weld County Commissioners and various county departments and affiliated agencies. Responsibilities include representation in court, statutory and administrative hearings, legal advice, document preparation, and other duties assigned by the County Attorney. Legal Representation (65%) Provide legal representation in court for and on behalf of Weld County in civil and regulatory matters as assigned. Appear on behalf of the County in mental health cases, land‑use zoning violations, and dog‑at‑large citations. Represent departments in administrative hearings for payment collection, unemployment claims, and property tax appeals. Research and analyze statutes, jurisprudence, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and administrative codes and rules. Negotiate with private entities on legal issues affecting Weld County government. Legal Advice (30%) Attend Board meetings and provide legal counsel regarding matters considered and meeting conduct. Offer legal advice to other elected officials and county departments. Prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, appeals, contracts, leases, and deeds. Inform County Officers of legal issues related to statutes, ordinances, policies, and practices. Draft and review proposed resolutions and ordinances for Board consideration. Assist in developing administrative procedures for county agencies. Participate in public meetings as requested and serve as a legal resource for Weld County. Other Duties (5%) Perform additional job‑related duties assigned by the County Attorney. Required Qualifications Education: Juris Doctorate and 2 years of practicing law. Preferred Experience: 3 years of civil legal representation, including experience representing a government agency. Skills and Abilities: Strong legal research and writing skills. Computer proficiency to perform essential job functions. Professional communication with clients, colleagues, opposing counsel, and the court. Licenses and Certifications: Bar admission in the State of Colorado. Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check prior to employment start date. Driver’s License: Valid Colorado State Driver’s License required by employment start date and throughout employment. Pre‑Employment Screening: Required drug screening conducted per Weld County policy. Employment Conditions: Position is exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
