Assistant Dean

The Assistant Dean for Health Sciences reports to the Dean of Health Sciences and Director of Nursing and serves as a division-level academic leader responsible for advancing the strategic priorities of the Health Sciences programs. The Assistant Dean provides leadership and oversight for fiscal management, continuous quality improvement, and academic excellence across assigned programs. The Assistant Dean exercises delegated decision-making authority within assigned Health Sciences programs and operates under the general direction of the Dean of Health Sciences and Director of Nursing. This role exercises delegated authority in the recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and supervision of full-time and adjunct faculty and coordinates faculty orientation, mentoring, and ongoing professional development initiatives. The Assistant Dean champions student success by addressing student concerns and supporting initiatives that promote enrollment, retention, and completion. In collaboration with divisional leadership, the Assistant Dean supports curriculum development and revision efforts and facilitates industry partnerships that strengthen program quality, workforce alignment, and experiential learning opportunities, including apprenticeships and internships. The Assistant Dean also coordinates academic scheduling, identifies facility and resource needs, and ensures that faculty and students meet all regulatory, accreditation, and clinical participation requirements. Education & Experience Requirements Education Required: Master’s degree in Educational Administration, Higher Education Leadership, or a health sciences–related discipline from an accredited institution. Preferred: Additional graduate coursework or credentials in leadership, administration, education, or a related field. Experience Required: Minimum of three (3) years of instructional experience in a postsecondary or healthcare education setting. Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in a healthcare or health sciences–related field. Demonstrated experience providing leadership for personnel, projects, programs, or events. Experience building and sustaining effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external partners. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across multiple modalities, including speaking, presenting, writing, and professional networking. Preferred: Five (5) or more years of instructional experience. Experience working within a community college or similar open-access higher education environment. Experience with curriculum development, program review, or academic program improvement. Experience working in a collective bargaining environment. Experience with healthcare accreditation, regulatory, or compliance processes. Experience with budget development, fiscal oversight, or resource management. Experience researching, writing, implementing, or managing grants. Essential Functions & Position Duties Leadership & Decision-Making Exercise delegated authority in the recruitment, credentialing, evaluation, and supervision of full-time and adjunct faculty. Provide leadership in resolving student, faculty, and operational issues using sound judgment and collaborative decision-making. Serve as a division-level leader supporting the strategic direction of Health Sciences programs. Engage in continuous quality improvement efforts to ensure academic excellence and program effectiveness. Support Academic Affairs Administration in the development and implementation of enrollment, retention, and student success initiatives. Support and coordinate the development, review, and revision of Health Sciences curricula in collaboration with faculty and divisional leadership to ensure alignment with workforce needs and academic standards. Operations & Program Management Coordinate Health Sciences student admission processes within assigned programs in alignment with institutional procedures and program requirements. Coordinate office, instructional, and academic schedules in collaboration with Academic Affairs Administration. Coordinate course schedules, including clinical rotations for students and faculty, in collaboration with program coordinators. Maintain and update Health Sciences program handbooks and related academic documentation. Participate in college committees, task forces, and advisory boards as assigned. Provide fiscal oversight for Health Sciences programs in accordance with institutional policies and budgetary guidelines. Identify facility, equipment, and resource needs in support of academic and clinical program delivery. Champion institutional and external accreditation processes, including assessment activities and program review. Ensure faculty and students meet all regulatory, accreditation, and clinical participation requirements. Monitor program compliance with accreditation, licensure, and institutional standards. Communication, Collaboration & External Relations Champion student success by addressing student concerns and supporting timely, effective resolutions. Foster and sustain industry, clinical, and workforce partnerships that support program quality and experiential learning opportunities. Collaborate with faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners to advance Health Sciences program goals. Coordinate orientation activities for newly hired faculty and adjunct faculty. Support faculty mentoring and professional development initiatives in alignment with divisional and institutional goals. Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement among faculty and staff. Non-Essential functions of the position Attend evening or weekend meetings, events, or activities as required to support academic programs, accreditation activities, or external partnerships. Provide support for special projects or initiatives related to Health Sciences programs as assigned by divisional leadership. Assist with planning and implementation of special events, orientations, or professional development activities as needed. Participate in training, professional development, or institutional initiatives that support continuous improvement and leadership development. Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the scope and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) – Assistant Dean of Nursing Knowledge Knowledge of higher education administration, academic program operations, and instructional practices within health sciences or related disciplines. Knowledge of accreditation, licensure, regulatory, and compliance requirements applicable to health sciences programs and clinical education. Knowledge of curriculum development, program assessment, and continuous quality improvement processes. Knowledge of budget development, fiscal oversight, and resource allocation within an academic environment. Knowledge of collective bargaining agreements, faculty contracts, and shared governance practices within higher education. Skills Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to recruit, evaluate, mentor, and support faculty and adjunct faculty. Effective planning and organizational skills to manage multiple programs, initiatives, and competing priorities. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess program needs and implement effective solutions. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly to diverse audiences. Skill in building and sustaining collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, students, administrators, and external partners. Proficiency in the use of institutional technology systems and data to support scheduling, assessment, reporting, and decision-making. Abilities Ability to exercise sound judgment and make informed decisions within delegated authority. Ability to lead and support change initiatives related to program improvement, accreditation, and student success. Ability to interpret and apply institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements. Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Ability to work effectively in a complex, team-oriented academic environment. Ability to maintain a student-centered focus while balancing institutional, programmatic, and regulatory priorities.
