Bus Driver Overview The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) invites applications for entry into the MetroBus Operator Training Program as Student Bus Operators. Applications are welcomed from both civilians and current/former military personnel. Candidates must be at least 21 years old, pass a background check and medical examination, and possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Learner’s Permit with Passenger Bus and Air Brakes endorsements. During training, CDL permit holders with endorsements are paid $18 per hour, CDL license holders with endorsements are paid $20 per hour, and upon completion of training and transition to a full‑time MetroBus Operator position the hourly rate increases to $30.62. Responsibilities Successfully complete the MetroBus Operator and CDL training program, including classroom study, on‑route training, driving experience, and preparation for the state CDL examination. Perform complete pre‑ and post‑operation inspection of assigned vehicles to ensure tires, fluids, safety equipment, gauges, and controls are in proper working order; report safety issues on standard reports. Follow all required safety policies and procedures. Safely operate a passenger bus along designated routes, read route descriptions, and provide courteous professional customer service to passengers. Continuously monitor the condition of assigned vehicles to remain operationally ready at all times. Complete and submit accident and incident reports in accordance with established guidelines. Qualifications Minimum 21 years of age. Licensed driver for a minimum of four (4) years. Commercial Driver’s License or Learner’s Permit with Passenger Bus and Air Brakes endorsement before starting Bus Training. Driving record showing no more than two (2) moving violations and no moving‑violation suspension or revocation within the last three (3) years. Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Bus and Air Brake endorsements (must be acquired by conclusion of the Bus training program). High School Diploma/GED (preferred). Valid CDL with Passenger Bus and Air Brake endorsements (preferred). Valid Medical examination and ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Applicable military occupational skills (MOS) or service occupational codes (SOC) include: US Army 88M; US Air Force 2T111, 2T131, 2T151; US Marines 3531, 3534. Evaluation Criteria Skills and/or behavioral assessment. Personal interview. Verification of education and experience (including certifications and licenses). Criminal background check.
