Phlebotomist – DC

This role offers an opportunity for an experienced phlebotomist to provide high-quality specimen collection and processing services in a fast-paced hospital-based setting. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections across all age groups, ensure accurate labeling and handling, and support efficient workflow through troubleshooting, training, and process improvement recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a clear, safe, and efficient manner.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples, according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner.
• Handle specimen labeling, including matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accuracy.
• Centrifuge, split, label, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory protocols.
• Update patient information accurately and in a timely manner within the appropriate systems.
• Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature and in the appropriate locations.
• Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques and support training efforts for colleagues as needed.
• Assist in troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
• Work collaboratively with a team in an inpatient/outpatient hospital environment to support patient care and laboratory operations.

Essential Skills

• 1–2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience collecting specimens from patients across all age groups, including pediatric and geriatric populations.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Strong skills in specimen collection, labeling, and handling in accordance with established procedures.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test orders.
• Experience with specimen processing, including centrifuging, splitting, labeling, and freezing specimens.
• Competence in updating patient information and maintaining accurate records.
• Customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and healthcare staff.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced hospital or inpatient/outpatient setting while maintaining high quality and accuracy.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with both pediatric and geriatric patients.
• Comfort working in an inpatient/outpatient hospital environment with a steady volume of daily draws.
• Ability to contribute to workflow improvements through troubleshooting and recommending process changes.
• Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination tasks in a laboratory setting.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to following laboratory safety and quality protocols.

Work Environment

This position is based in an inpatient/outpatient (IOP) setting within a hospital environment, where you will perform approximately 30–40 blood draws per day. You will work as part of a team rather than independently, supporting both pediatric and geriatric patients along with other age groups. The role involves periods of standing on and off throughout the day, depending on patient volume and workflow. The schedule follows a first-shift pattern, Monday through Friday from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with established procedures and protocols to ensure safe and accurate specimen collection, processing, and transport.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
