Specialist, Contract Underwriting - E&S/ Specialty (Contract+)

It is part of Nationwide’s Contract+ unit and requires brokerage casualty (GL) underwriting experience in Excess & Surplus (non‑admitted) lines. The position does not qualify for employer‑sponsored work authorization. Job Summary: As an Underwriting Specialist in Contract, you will determine individual risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms and conditions for complex risks, manage production and loss ratio goals, analyze claims and loss history, and maintain relationships with general agents and reinsurers. Key Responsibilities Review individual risks with assigned agents or programs and decide to accept or decline business. Analyze exposures, develop adequate premium charges, and determine appropriate endorsements and exclusions. Place reinsurance, if required, following departmental guidelines. Achieve individual production and loss ratio goals through effective territory management and marketing. Quote, price, and underwrite new and renewal policies and endorsements primarily for complex or service‑sensitive accounts. Monitor risk selection and pricing decisions across the agency plant at both book‑of‑business and individual account levels. Address complex coverage, program, agent, and program manager issues. Continuously analyze premium and loss results by agency, state, major class of business, and program. Assess submission quality and recommend corrective actions; develop and implement action plans as needed. Handle policy maintenance items and mid‑term requests. Review endorsement requests and process necessary changes to the policy. Examine loss control reports and make recommendations to agents or modify policies. Follow up on outstanding information as required. Review claim activity and take appropriate action. Analyze agency books of business and profit/growth trends to recommend and implement action plans. Foster positive business relationships with general agents through daily contact and conflict resolution. Travel to agency offices for audits, training, or marketing visits. Entertain visiting agents as required. Assist with development of marketing ideas, underwriting seminars, and marketing campaigns. Place reinsurance per department guidelines using treaty, semi‑automatic, and facultative facilities. Maintain good working relationships with reinsurers. Market Nationwide products and services to drive agency and company results. Assist agencies with pipeline management, producer development, and new business in targeted industries. Respond effectively to assess accounts and develop winning business propositions. Assist with program research and development, form development, rate development, and technical assistance to agents, underwriters, and assistants. Perform other responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Undergraduate degree preferred; equivalent work experience considered. Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred. Six years of related experience or five years as an underwriter in excess & surplus lines preferred. Knowledge of underwriting policies, insurance law, rating plans, reinsurance concepts, general agency systems, regulatory issues, market conditions, and company operations. Strong communication, interpersonal, negotiation, and analytical skills; ability to work independently and manage assigned lines. Proficiency with insurance software and technology.
