Position Responsibilities:
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, handle decontamination, and update patient information.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explain in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Fully understand all physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure complete accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport.
- Store specimen samples according to required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately label, and follow specific protocol procedures required for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2-4 years of experience.
