Assistant Head Men's & Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Coach

The Alfred University Assistant Head Cross Country & Track & Field Coach is responsible for assisting the head coach with the organization and management of the NCAA Division (Ill) men's and women's cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field programs. This includes teaching and coaching student‑athletes for successful competition; mentoring and engaging student‑athletes for athletic, academic, and personal success; meeting recruiting goals; civic engagement; planning and managing budgets and schedules; fundraising; and developing positive alumni and parent relations. Salary: $62,354-$64,853 Annually Essential Functions Teaching and Coaching Maintain an exemplary standard of conduct, which reflects the highest level of professionalism and good judgment. Provide a teaching and learning environment that is nurturing, intellectual and supportive of individual differences. Assist in the development of strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport to best prepare the team and individuals for competition. Assist in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of practice and competition plans that are effective for the sport and congruent with team/individual ability. Assist in the development and implementation of a team philosophy that is supportive of the educational mission of the university and the athletic department. Direct student athletes, part‑time assistant coaches, and support staff to conduct themselves in ways that bring credit to the team and Alfred University. Recruiting Under the direction of the head coach implement a recruiting plan consistent with Alfred University’s mission. Cultivate a recruiting network. Assist in maintaining the department’s recruiting contact management system. Recruit student‑athletes that coincide with the academic profile of Alfred University students. Maintain open communication with other Alfred University coaches regarding shared prospects. Be knowledgeable about admissions and financial aid processes. Assist the head coach in meeting recruiting goals. Professional Development Maintain active membership in professional sport organizations. Pursue formal and informal educational opportunities and participate in department professional development seminars. Civic Engagement Promote sport in area communities. Establish and maintain a positive relationship with interested segments of the community (e.g., youth groups, civic organizations, media). Program Management Comply with institutional and departmental policies. Be knowledgeable of and comply with all NCAA and Empire 8 rules and regulations. Supervise part‑time assistant coaching staff. Work collaboratively with department staff. Manage equipment, uniforms, and facilities. Work collaboratively with advancement staff to plan and implement sport fundraising activities. Maintain professional coach‑athlete relationships. Develop a positive relationship with alumni and parents of current and prospective student‑athletes. Other Duties & Responsibilities Serve on a departmental operational team (10%). Should the successful candidate have NSCA‑CSCS certification, the appointment will include coaching strength and conditioning within the athletics department. Assist with department initiatives. Represent the department on campus committees. Support and assist in creating intersections for faculty, staff and students that will assist in transforming people’s lives. Support and assist in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and students. Maintain a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, thereby welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff and students and expanding access to the AU experience. Maintain a safe working environment within and around facilities and associated equipment and supplies, including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to hazards associated with work. Participate in all required assigned training, including safety training and comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Effective written and oral communication skills. Contribute to the overall success of the university by performing other duties as assigned. Qualifications‑Education & Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Formal Education Bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree is preferred, especially in education, health science, sport management, or related field. Experience A minimum of four years as a collegiate cross country and track & field student‑athlete and/or coach is required. A minimum of two years of collegiate track & field coaching is required. Demonstrated successful recruiting and retention of cross‑country and track & field student‑athletes, preferably at NCAA Division (Ill), is required. Additional Knowledge/Skills Proven organizational skills and a commitment to student growth and academic achievement. Overall knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Certification as a strength and conditioning professional is an asset (e.g., NSCA‑CSCS). Integrity, high ethical standards, excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and commitment to teamwork. Competence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver’s license. First Aid, AED, and CPR certification required by start date. Willingness to work nights and weekends.
