This Phlebotomist II position focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting smooth laboratory workflows in a fast-paced environment. The role combines hands-on phlebotomy, specimen handling, and data entry with troubleshooting, training support, and process improvement recommendations to ensure accurate, safe, and efficient laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and professionalism.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, ensuring they understand what to expect.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure correct patient and test identification.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the prescription or script to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
• Package specimens securely for transport, following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
• Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, following protocol for each test.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.
• Update patient information in the system accurately and in a timely manner to support proper test processing and reporting.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure the correct tests are performed and processed.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory standards in the laboratory.
• Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety requirements, and best practices.
• Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy appropriate inquiries.
• Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve processes.
• Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and workflow procedures to colleagues as needed.

This is a Contract position based out of Rome, NY.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. This is a fully onsite position in Rome, NY.
