Maintenance Technician IIThe City of Garden City is accepting applications for Maintenance Technician II with the Lee Richardson Zoo. This position is responsible for the maintenance of vehicles, equipment, department facilities, improvements, and Landscape Maintenance. Assists in exhibit design/build, maintenance, grounds keeping, snow removal, and other facility-wide maintenance activities. Reports to and takes direction from the Zoo Facilities Supervisor.Examples of DutiesPerforms routine and emergency repairs on mechanical equipment to include mowers, truck, front end loader, etc., common hand and power tools, small electrical equipment, and facility-wide building systems.Designs, builds/fabricates, and installs various structures and enclosures. Detailed knowledge of rough carpentry, finish carpentry, metal fabrication (welding), electrical wiring, plumbing, and heating/cooling systems.Installs and maintains signage, way-finding, and woodwork in the buildings and exhibits.Performs mowing, trimming, mulching, seeding, weeding, planting, spraying and fertilizing plants, grass, flowers and shrubs.Installs, repairs, and maintains sprinkler operations throughout department grounds.Monitors and cleans trash and rubbish from grounds and buildings.Performs work in a safe and proper way in compliance with city safety procedures and policies.Communicates with visitors as needed for safety purposes.Performs other related duties as directed.Typical QualificationsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of routine electrical procedures, irrigation system operations, and carpentry methods and techniques. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Skill in the routine use of hand and power tools. Ability to perform physical activities in varying weather conditions. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate with city employees and the general public. Ability to work and accomplish tasks with little supervision. Education, Certification, and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Associates of Arts or mechanical/technical trade school education preferred. Over one year of experience in building and equipment maintenance, small engine repair, fabrication, irrigation system, carpentry, or a related field, with some grounds maintenance, horticulture, or pool maintenance preferred. Valid Kansas driver's license required.Supplemental InformationEnvironment: Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors with some indoor maintenance. Weather conditions include extreme, moderate and temperate cold and heat; snow, fog, ice, rain, sleet, hail, high and gusting winds, humid and dry weather. Some chemical herbicides and fertilizers. Surfaces: Grass, sand, gravel, asphalt, concrete, weeds, dirt and clay. Physical Characteristics: Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and spin & roll 55 lb drums, carry, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull, grab, stand, sit, walk, see, hear, write, drive and operate equipment.
